    The Louisiana Special Schools are experiencing a critical shortage of certified teachers, school counselors, interpreters and educators of the Deaf or hard of hearing and Visually Impaired.

    Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support (PBIS) Aide, LSD (Louisiana School for the Deaf)

    This is a full-time 9 month and 8 hours per day position.

    Special School District

    The Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support (PBIS) Aide plays a critical role in fostering a safe, supportive, and positive school climate aligned with LSD's behavioral expectations and values. This position emphasizes proactive support by building student relationships, modeling appropriate behaviors, reinforcing positive behavior systems, and de-escalating potential conflicts in hallways, playgrounds, cafeterias, and other common areas. The aide supports schoolwide efforts to help students meet behavioral goals before intervention is needed from counseling or administrative staff.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Prior experience working with school-age children in educational or behavioral settings preferred.
    • Basic knowledge of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) or willingness to be trained.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and the ability to build rapport with students and staff.
    • Ability to remain calm and supportive during student crises or escalated situations.
    • Strong communication skills and a willingness to use visual supports and accessible language.
    • Knowledge of or willingness to learn basic American Sign Language (ASL) is preferred.

    Responsibilities

    Supporting Schoolwide PBIS Initiatives

    • Support the implementation of the school's PBIS framework and behavior expectations across all student settings.
    • Supervise students during transitions (arrival, hallway changes, lunch, recess, dismissal) and maintain a positive, structured environment.
    • Provide frequent encouragement and reinforcement aligned with students' behavior plans or Check-In Check-Out (CICO) supports.
    • Oversee the PBIS store: manage inventory, collect student input on reward items, and coordinate prize distribution.
    • Lead the planning and execution of PBIS events and schoolwide incentive celebrations.
    • Model effective conflict resolution, de-escalation, and restorative communication strategies with students and staff.
    • Serve as a "peacekeeper" by guiding students to calming or sensory regulation spaces when needed, offering tools to regain emotional regulation.
    • Attend Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons with students as assigned and reinforce SEL concepts throughout the day.
    • Collaborate with staff to identify and implement proactive supports for students demonstrating behavioral challenges.
    • Assist with collecting behavior data (e.g., minor incident reports, CICO tracking sheets) and inputting it into behavior tracking systems as directed.
    • Help identify trends in student behavior and assist the team in using this data to refine support strategies.
    • Participate in student re-entry meetings or reflection sessions following disciplinary removals, helping to reinforce expectations and restore student relationships.

    • Actively participate in all team meetings including but not limited to: Grade Level and/or Department meetings, Professional Development, Data Digs, and Monthly Professional Learning Community meetings as assigned.
    • Collaborate with others to drive the success of your grade level and school.
    • Help with school events that showcase positive behavior systems (e.g., family PBIS nights, awards assemblies, or volunteer opportunities in the PBIS store).
    • Help orient substitute teachers and new staff on basic PBIS expectations, common area norms, and student supports.
    • Assist with managing student transitions during fire drills, lockdowns, or other emergency procedures to maintain safety and calm.
    • Seek solutions to problems you see constantly. Constantly look across the school and ask yourself, "How can our school be better tomorrow?"
    • Proactively propose solutions and ideas to improve the school.
