Senior Project Engineer - Transmission

Location: Texas City, TX
Salary Range: $95,000 – $180,000 (Depending on Experience)

A leading Texas electric transmission and distribution utility is seeking a Senior Project Engineer to support complex transmission and infrastructure projects within its utility operations. This role is responsible for engineering project execution, coordination, and technical leadership on capital projects supporting grid reliability, system expansion, and regulatory compliance.

The organization owns and operates critical electric infrastructure across Texas and provides long?term stability, meaningful technical challenges, and opportunities for career growth within a regulated utility environment.

Position Overview
  • Position may be filled at the Project Engineer III or Project Engineer IV level
  • Final title, responsibilities, and compensation determined by experience and qualifications
  • On?site role based in Texas City, TX

Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Senior Project Engineer plans, schedules, conducts, and coordinates engineering work for transmission and utility infrastructure projects. At the higher level, this role serves as a senior technical advisor on large, complex, and high?profile initiatives.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities Project Engineer III
  • Manage engineering efforts for projects of moderate scope or detailed phases of major projects
  • Conduct performance, cost, and schedule studies of varying complexity
  • Support operational teams through the application of standard and non?standard engineering techniques
  • Communicate engineering recommendations and evaluations to internal stakeholders
  • Represent the organization in engineering matters of varying complexity
  • Provide ongoing technical support to internal teams
  • Apply engineering expertise to develop or improve standards
  • Provide technical direction to contractors and company personnel
Project Engineer IV
  • Lead large, complex, and high?visibility engineering projects
  • Perform advanced performance, cost, and schedule evaluations using innovative or modified techniques
  • Serve as a technical advisor and consultant on advanced engineering matters
  • Identify and resolve broad technical or organizational challenges impacting company objectives
  • Represent the organization in advanced engineering and project discussions
  • Provide senior?level technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and technical staff
  • Apply extensive engineering expertise to improve or develop new standards

Preferred Experience & Knowledge
  • Understanding of ERCOT market rules, including Nodal Protocols, Market Guides, and the RPG project process
  • Transmission planning experience, including familiarity with NERC TPL standards and the ERCOT Planning Guide
  • Ability to identify near?term and long?term transmission system upgrade needs
  • Familiarity with power system analysis fundamentals, high?voltage transmission lines, and substation equipment
  • Ability to interpret engineering documentation such as one?line diagrams, physical layouts, grading & drainage plans, plan & profiles, and geotechnical reports

Core Competencies
  • Strong knowledge of engineering principles across generation, transmission, and distribution systems
  • Ability to apply technical, economic, and decision?analysis methodologies to complex problems
  • Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards (IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC, etc.)
  • Ability to translate electrical theory into practical utility applications
  • Comfortable working in and around high?voltage facilities (up to 345kV)
  • Ability to forecast budgets and evaluate project tradeoffs
  • Demonstrated leadership, self?motivation, and strong interpersonal skills

Education Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET?accredited institution
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering preferred

Experience Requirements

  • Project Engineer III:
    • Bachelor’s degree plus 4+ years of engineering experience
    • OR 3+ years with FE/EIT certification
    • OR 3+ years with a Master’s degree

  • Project Engineer IV:
    • Bachelor’s degree plus 5–7 years of progressive engineering experience
    • Demonstrated senior?level technical responsibility

Preferred Certifications & Licenses
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
  • FE/EIT certification preferred (Engineer III)
  • Valid driver’s license meeting company requirements

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Combination of office and field work (primarily office?based)
  • Work around high?voltage electrical facilities, construction equipment, and office environments
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb, bend, and work at heights
  • Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

Compliance & Background Requirements
  • Position may be subject to NERC CIP cybersecurity standards
  • Successful completion of identity verification, criminal background check, and personnel risk assessment required
  • Cybersecurity training required prior to access and annually thereafter
  • Credit check may be required depending on role and location
