Be the student voice that helps shape the future of teaching at Bellingham Technical College and build your resume at the same time. As a Student Representative on a Tenure Review Committee, youll collaborate with faculty and administrators to provide valuable feedback on classroom instruction while helping ensure excellence in education. This unique leadership opportunity offers firsthand experience in college governance and the faculty evaluation process.

Salary:

Starting salary is $19.13 per hour; estimated 2 hours per quarter with a one-year term. This term may be renewable for a second year if you are still an active student at BTC.

Position Duties & Responsibilities

The Student Representative serves as a member of a faculty tenure review committee, providing the student perspective during the tenure review process. This position contributes to the colleges commitment to excellence in teaching and student success by participating in tenure review committee meetings, reviewing tenure review materials, and providing thoughtful feedback regarding the faculty members effectiveness in supporting student learning. The Student Representative is expected to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and impartiality throughout the tenure review process.

Duties include:

  • Attend committee orientation and required training prior to participating in tenure review activities
  • Actively contribute as a member of the tenure review committee.
  • Attend scheduled committee meetings and maintain regular participation throughout the review process.
  • Review tenure review documents in a timely manner
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding committee discussions, review materials, and faculty personnel information.
  • Demonstrate fairness, professionalism, and respect throughout the tenure review process.
  • Disclose any potential conflicts of interest to the Vice President of Instruction
  • Perform other committee-related responsibilities as assigned by the Committee Chair.

Qualifications

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Communicate clearly (written and verbal)
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, administrators, and committee members
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive personnel matters
  • Commitment to fairness, objectivity, and integrity

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled student in good academic and disciplinary standing
  • Maintain a minimum of 12 credits per quarter
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Dependable and able to attend scheduled meetings

Supplemental Information

Confidentiality:

The selection process will be determined by the ASBTC Executive Board. Student Representatives will be assigned a committee by the Vice President of Instruction. Student Representatives are entrusted with confidential personnel information as part of the tenure review process. All committee discussions, tenure review materials, recommendations, and related documents are confidential and may not be disclosed to individuals outside the committee except as authorized by college policy or applicable law. Violation of confidentiality may result in removal from the committee and other disciplinary action as appropriate.

Compensation, Work Schedule and Benefits:

$19.13 per hour

Work schedule:

Estimated to be 2 hours per quarter with a one-year assignment and the possibility of renewing for a second year if the student is still an active student at BTC.

Benefits:

Paid sick leave in accordance with Washington State law and Initiative I-1433. Sick leave is accrued at 1 hour for every 40 hours worked. Employee Assistance Program (EAP), a free counseling & referral program. Potential flexible schedule.
