JOB SUMMARY

This position is located in the Central Detention Facility (CDF) or the Correctional Treatment Facility (CTF), located at 1901 D Street, SE Washington, DC.

The incumbent serves as second in command (Captain) for uniform staff in overseeing a broad range of security operations, inside and outside of various locations, through subordinate supervisors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As a shift Supervisor (Captain) on any assigned shift, the incumbent is responsible for maintaining the overall security of the Central Detention Facility; or the Correctional Treatment Facility (CTF). Responsible for maintaining the overall security of the Central Detention Facility; directs and coordinates the Correctional program through subordinate supervisory officers. Participate in the training and evaluation of subordinate officers. Accountable for training and development, performance improvement and annual evaluation of the subordinate supervisory officers. Submits reports on individuals job performance, reprimands, proposed corrective/adverse actions, awards and commendations.

Ascertain that all posts are properly manned in compliance with the official duty assignments as necessitated by emergency situations. Approve the adjustment of work schedule, additional correctional officers or the reassignment of staff when such action is deemed advisable in the interest of security. Conduct investigation to uncover adverse penal conditions which directly affect the attitude and behavior of inmate. Conduct and supervise investigations of all charges against inmates for infraction of rules and regulations and determines the disposition of the reports. Represents management in dealing with employee's grievances and complaints. Supervise the preparation and maintenance of time and attendance records, reports of individual performance reports, and submit with recommendation to the appropriate officials.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. To be creditable, applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the line of progression.

An example of Specialized Experience is the ability to provide leadership and direction in a supervisory capacity and team-based environment; and securing subordinate staff.

At the closing date of the vacancy announcement, shall have at least one (1) year continuous experience at the next lower grade (Lieutenant) as of the date of the interview, or equivalent experience as supervisor performing work involving the supervision of incarcerated individuals in a facility.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Must possess a valid driver's license. Must be able to use a firearm and obtain and maintain a license to carry the firearm.

WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIORNMENT

Work is performed in a Correctional Institution. Responds to calls required and as needed to return to duty.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS

Screening every ten (10) days.

Tour of Duty: 3 Shifts 7 am to 4 pm, 4 pm to 12 am & 12 am to 7 am.

Must be flexible to various work hours, seven days a week and at various assignment locations.

Pay Plan, Series and Grade: MS-0007-12

Duration of Appointment: Management Supervisory Service (MSS) At-Will: At-will employment applies to the MSS. All positions and appointments in the MSS serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

MSS At-Will Statement: Positions in the Management Supervisory Service (MSS) serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is not covered under a collective bargaining agreement.

Position Designation: This position is designated as a Safety Sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre-employment and periodic Criminal Background Checks and Traffic Records Checks (as applicable). This position is also subject to mandatory pre-employment and random Drug and Alcohol Testing. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.

A TB Test is required prior to entry on duty.

Essential Position Designation: The incumbent of this position is designated as "Essential" to the Agency.

Residency Requirement: Applicants claiming "Residency Preference" will be required to maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of employment.
