The City of La Habra is recruiting for part-time and/or substitute positions as Teacher for the Child Development Division, School-Age, and Pre-School Programs. Depending on the assignment, the Teacher position may be working with school-age or preschool-age children for up to 8 hours/day, any day of the week, not to exceed 28.5 hours per week. These positions are authorized under State rules and funds, are grant-funded for specific programs, and may be limited-term (subject to grant continuation).

ABOUT THE DIVISION:

We believe each child should receive individual attention, encouragement, support, and guidance. A variety of experiences are provided to develop the childs fullest potential. This included preparing each child for the next step in their education journey. We have a strong commitment to the community, and involvement has been at the core of developing many social service programs offered through this agency. Full Day and Part Day spaces are available for families who meet eligibility requirements. This full-year program provides care and educational services 12 months a year. We strive to serve all children and constantly seek ways to accommodate the unique needs of children with disabilities.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Under the general direction of the Site Director, the Teacher plans, organizes, and implements developmentally appropriate curriculum for children enrolled in the Child Development program. The Teacher provides a safe and nurturing environment conducive to the growth and development of children. This includes instructing children in activities designed to promote social/emotional, physical health and safety, and cognitive growth. Prepares lesson plans and assessments for school-age or preschool-age children; assists in planning programs and activities; and oversees assistants and volunteers in the classroom.

Examples of Duties

(Duties may include, but are not limited to the following):

• Supports program planning for school-age and preschool-age children in preparation for their transition into the next grade level.
• Oversees and supervises children, volunteers and staff in the classroom instruction and playground activities.
• Develops and submits lesson plans by established policies and format.
• Conducts formative and summative assessments using tools provided by the State and Child Development program. ( D.R.D.P.)
• Prepares and maintains a clean, safe, attractive, and positive learning environment
• Administers routine first aid to students as needed; administers medication and medical procedures per specific medical instructions.
• Facilitates the Individual Education Plan (IEP) for students with special needs
• Participates in professional development and training as assigned; attends staff and other meetings as required.
• Participates in all Child Development community family events outside of typical work hours, parades, performances, etc.
• Maintains a variety of reports and records, including safety checklists, sign-in sheets, accident reports, attendance, and meal counts
• May act for the Site Director in the absence of direct supervision
• Plans and implements parent involvement activities:
• Maintain regular parent communication through notes, HUBBE software, Class Dojo, phone calls, and parent conferences.
• Develop positive public relations through communication and activities; involve parents and families in school activities; plan with other teachers and collaborating agencies to implement family activities.
• Performs related duties and completes special projects as required.

Qualifying Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of:

• Child-development behavior characteristics of children ages 2.9 years - 12 years, related learning, emotional stages, and physical development.
• Early childhood curriculum and appropriate implementation, differentiation, and assessment methods.
• Child Care and Education regulations, requirements, laws, codes, policies and Health and safety regulations.
• Methods of instruction and safe practices in classroom activities.
• Lesson plan development.
• Requirements of maintaining a safe, clean, and orderly classroom.
• Methods of observing, evaluating, and recording child behavior.
• Record-keeping and report preparation techniques.
• Operation of personal computers, tablets and applicable software.
• Oral and written communication skills using correct English, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

• Develop, organize, and implement approved curriculum for children enrolled in the Child Development program.

Typical Qualifications

Education/Experience Requirements:

Option 1: Applicants must hold a Child Development Teacher Permit or higher.

OR

APPLICANTS WHO DO NOT POSSESS A PERMIT MAY APPLY BY MEETING ONE OF THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

Option 2: Applicants applying for a Child Development Associate Teacher Permit must have 50 days of experience working with children (minimum of 3 hours per day and within a period of 4 years), plus 12 Child Development Core Units, and be able to apply within 30 days of employment. *Must be continuously enrolled until obtaining the Child Development Teacher Permit.

OR

Option 3: Applicants applying for a Child Development Teacher Permit must have 175 days of experience working with children (minimum of 3 hours per day and within a period of 4 years), plus 24 Child Development Core Units and 16 general education units be able to apply within 30 days of employment.

OR

Option 4: AA or higher ECE/CD or related field with 3 units of supervised field experience in ECE/CD setting.

Bilingual in English and Spanish highly desirable.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES:

Pediatric First Aid and Pediatric CPR certification is required (30 days after employment). Must pass California Community Care Licensing fingerprint clearance to work with children. Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver's license and proof of automobile insurance coverage.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have access to an automobile with adequate vehicle insurance coverage and exceptional driving record.

Conditions of Employment:

• Successful Completion of a criminal history background check.
• Obtain and maintain all certifications and educational requirements as established by state and federal guidelines. Including:
• CPR/First Aid certificate for infants and children.
• TB test; proof of current Influenza, Pertussis and MMR vaccination.

While performing the duties of this class, an employee performs moderately heavy work; regularly required to sit, stand, talk and hear both in person and by telephone; and use hands to operate, finger, handle or feel a variety of equipment; and reach with hands and arms. Hearing and speaking to exchange information The employee is required to walk, climb, stoop or bend, kneel, push, and pull frequently. Must be able to lift and carry a small child (up to 50 pounds) as needed/in the event of an emergency. Sitting on the floor and getting up and down to assist children in the classroom. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Must pass a pre-employment physical including a tuberculosis test and required immunizations (SB792).

MENTAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to work on multiple concurrent tasks with constant interruptions, read and interpret documents and information, use oral communication skills, and interact with City staff, elected officials, residents, the general public, and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom may be dissatisfied and/or abusive individuals.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is typically performed at indoor and outdoor program sites in seasonal weather conditions. The classroom and outdoor environment include outdoor play areas with climbing structures, sand, and riding toys. Work may be intermittently performed in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold. Work may require exposure to noise, dust, and dirt.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Public Employee Disaster Service Worker: In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, all La Habra city employees are required to perform assigned disaster service worker duties in the event of an emergency or a disaster.

RETIREMENT:

PART-TIME EMPLOYEE PAID SICK LEAVE:

Part-time employees are entitled to use accrued sick leave after 90 days of employment and are only permitted to use 40 hours of accrued sick leave time per year.
