Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Stepdown Unit Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 12-Hour Days Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 2 years License: Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS Must-Have: 1 year of experience with the patient population Description: The position is in a stepdown unit. The unit provides care for patients requiring intermediate care and downgraded critical care patients. The patient population includes those recovering from thoracic procedures, catheterizations, and various cardiac and vascular conditions. Nurse-to-patient ratios are typically 1:4 and 1:3 for post-surgical patients in the first 24 hours. Registered nurses are required to titrate drips, including medications for blood pressure management. Common titratable medications include amiodarone, nitroglycerin, nicardipine, epinephrine, and diltiazem. Charge nurses are present on each shift, but they rarely take an assignment. Patient care technicians are available with a ratio of 1:18. There are hospitalist and intensivist staff in-house 24/7. Respiratory therapy is available in the unit 24/7. Registered nurses must read and interpret telemetry strips. Remote telemetry technicians assist with monitoring. Shifts are scheduled from 0630 to 1900 and 1830 to 0700, and scheduling is managed by the unit manager. Weekend work is required every other week. Registered nurses may float to units with the same or lower levels of acuity. The dress code for this position is navy blue scrubs. Requests for time off should be submitted upfront and are limited in approval. The facility can cancel up to four shifts during a 13-week assignment. Experience in an acute care setting is preferred.
