Job Title: PCU RN Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Stepdown Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 1 year License: Required Certifications: ACLS, BLS Must-Have: 1 year of PCU or prior ICU experience. Excellent patient care and documentation skills. Cerner experience required. Description: The department consists of PCU/IMC/Med Surg. The unit has 12 beds plus 4 rooms for ICU, with an average census of 8 patients. The nurse to patient ratios are 1:3-5 in general, with 1:3 in ICU, and 1:3-4 in IMC/PCU. The medical-surgical unit has a ratio of 1:5. There are always 2 RNs in the department. Team nursing is practiced with RN and LPN caring for a total of 7 patients. Common diagnoses include pneumonia, COVID, and post-operative cases such as knees and hips. RNs are required to titrate drips including Amiodarone and Heparin. Charge nurses will typically take a small patient assignment and travelers may be asked to step into a charge role. The nurse supervisor oversees the ER and the floor and serves as a valuable resource. Nurse aids are present in the unit with a ratio dependent on the census. RNs are responsible for reading and interpreting telemetry strips. The shifts are self-scheduled to balance staffing needs. Flexibility is expected from travelers to help fill gaps in permanent staff schedules. Weekend requirements are every third weekend, and holiday work is required for two out of three holidays. There is an on-call and standby requirement, with a 45-minute response time. Travelers may have the option to float into other areas or go home and lose hours. Dress code is any solid color scrubs. All clinicians must clock in and out while on duty.
