Leidos Jobs: A Brief History
Leidos got its start in 1969 when scientist J. Robert Beyster founded Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) in San Diego, California. The United States government became SAIC’s first customer and hired the firm to analyze the effects of nuclear weapons.
The company expanded rapidly throughout the 1970s and 80s. In 1972, SAIC opened an office in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to assist the Air Force Weapons Laboratory with research on the effects of electromagnetic phenomena. By 1976, SAIC secured its first major global contract with the Kuwaiti Defense Forces.
Three years later, SAIC played a vital role in the cleanup of the nuclear disaster at the Three Mile Island nuclear station in Pennsylvania. During the 1980s, SAIC helped engineer the most hydrodynamic yacht for America’s Cup and won its first billion-dollar contract with the U.S. Department of Defense to create its Composite Health Care System.
In 2013, SAIC split into two companies: Leidos and the new SAIC under different ownership. Within the next three years, Leidos had acquired Lockheed Martin’s former IS&GS business and merged the two companies into one. In the following years, Leidos gained a lot of positive press.
The Human Rights Campaign named Leidos one of the Best Places to Work in 2017. One year later, Ethisphere Institute named it one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies. Today, Leidos is one of America’s leading defense, aviation, and technology companies with a net worth of more than $12 billion.
