Shipt: A Brief Background

Shipt was founded in 2014 by Birmingham, Alabama, entrepreneur Bill Smith. Before selling his financial technology company, Insight, to GreenDot Corporation, Smith had dabbled with the idea of providing a same-day grocery-delivery service. The idea was set in stone after Smith took his two children to the grocery store. Smith had to abandon the shopping trip—it’s challenging to bring two young kids into a store with you.

Before Shipt was launched, Smith calculated the benefits and potential drawbacks of starting a grocery-delivery business. After working with a team of engineers, and nearly on the brink of abandoning the idea, Smith settled on a business model that allows consumers to purchase items on the website, check out, and have the items delivered on the same day.

In 2017, Target Corporation acquired Shipt for $550 million. By 2018, Shipt had established a second office in San Francisco and expanded its locations to more than 70 U.S. cities. Today, it’s one of the leading delivery services in America for groceries, household items, pet products, and much more. Customers in more than 5,000 communities now rely on Shipt’s services.
