Target Jobs: A Brief Background
Target was formerly known as Goodfellow Dry Goods, which was established by real estate investor and banker George Draper Dayton in 1902. The name was later changed to Dayton Dry Goods Company and shortened to Dayton Company. The first Target store was opened on May 1, 1962, as a discount alternative to the Dayton department stores.
Dayton merged with J.L. Hudson Company in 1969 to established Dayton-Hudson Corporation and expand its department store operations. By 1975, Target became the company’s top revenue generator, reaching annual sales of $1 billion by 1979.
By the 1990s, Target stores began to open across the United States, offering a wider variety of goods than the original Target locations. The department store chain quickly expanded into a super store, offering groceries, photography studios, restaurants, and pharmacies. In 2000, Dayton-Hudson changed its name to Target Corporation. Today, there are more than 1,900 stores and 49 distribution centers across the U.S.
