The Progressive Care nurse primarily treats patients with the following diagnosis: compromised airway requiring intensive respiratory therapy, controlled infusion of antiarrhythmic or vasoactive IV drug therapy, acute poisoning, suicide attempts, multisystem failure, neurologic abnormalities, metabolic crisis, multiple trauma, chest pain, myocardial infarction, heart failure, hemodynamic instability, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, post-anesthesia care, mechanical ventilation, cardiac monitoring, arrhythmia analysis, thrombolytic therapy, GI bleeding, internal/external pacing, electrical cardioversion, acute dialysis (peritoneal, hemodialysis) and post-cardiac arrest. PCU nurses are encouraged and supported for professional growth with committee commitments, education seminars, certifications, advancement in degree, LEAD, preceptor course, and within-department education.
