Under the direction of a Fire Captain/Lieutenant, the Firefighter I is responsible for conducting fire department emergency and non-emergency activities during an assigned shift; engages in emergency scene activities including basic firefighting and emergency medical care; directs and performs a variety of staff support functions; and performs related work as assigned. The purpose of this classification is to perform technical and specialized work functions associated with preparing for and responding to fire, rescue, and disaster emergency calls, with protecting life and property, with supporting fire safety, prevention and equipment maintenance activities, and with providing emergency medical treatment, medical transportation, and/or assistance to Firefighter/Paramedics.
