<h1>Senior Geologist – CMT Technical Services (Utah)</h1>Compensation: $95,000 - $115,000 Salary (DOE) Location: Utah, Ogden preferred Job Type: Full-Time Department: Geotechnical Reports To: Geotechnical Service Line Manager<hr/><h2>Position Summary</h2>CMT Technical Services is seeking an experienced Senior Geologist to lead and support geologic, environmental, geotechnical, and subsurface investigation projects throughout Utah. This role utilizes advanced geological expertise in site characterization, environmental due diligence, construction-phase oversight, and geologic hazard evaluations. The Senior Geologist will manage complex projects, guide junior staff, interface with clients and regulators, and help deliver high-quality, data-driven solutions that support CMT's mission.<hr/><h2>Key Responsibilities</h2><h3>Project Leadership & Technical Work</h3><ul><li>Lead multi-disciplinary projects involving geologic evaluations, environmental site assessments, geotechnical subsurface investigations, and construction materials evaluations.</li><li>Conduct and oversee field investigations, including supervision of subsurface explorations, logging of soil and rock cores, sampling, geologic hazard mapping, hydrogeologic assessments, and environmental sampling.</li><li>Prepare high-quality technical reports, including ESA Phase I & II, geotechnical evaluations, groundwater studies, and geologic hazard assessments.</li><li>Interpret geologic, geotechnical, and environmental data to support engineering recommendations and regulatory requirements.</li><li>Provide quality control and technical review of geologic content prepared by junior staff.</li></ul><h3>Client & Agency Coordination</h3><ul><li>Serve as a technical resource to clients, project managers, municipalities, state agencies, and regulatory bodies.</li><li>Support permitting and compliance documentation for projects involving local, state, and federal agencies.</li><li>Attend meetings, site visits, and presentations with clients and stakeholders.</li></ul><h3>Fieldwork & Oversight</h3><ul><li>Lead or oversee field crews during drilling, test pits, trenching, environmental sampling, well installations, and site inspections.</li><li>Perform geologic hazard investigations for landslides, rockfall, surface fault rupture, avalanche, collapsible/expansive soils, liquefaction, and slope stability evaluations.</li><li>Ensure adherence to safety protocols, CMT standards, and regulatory requirements.</li></ul><h3>Team & Business Support</h3><ul><li>Mentor and train junior geologists, field technicians, and project staff.</li><li>Assist with proposal preparation, scope development, and project budgeting.</li><li>Contributes to strengthening CMT's technical capabilities and maintaining client relationships.</li></ul><hr/><h2>Qualifications</h2><ul><li>Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, Earth Science, or a related field; master's preferred.</li><li>7–10+ years of progressive geology-related experience in environmental, geotechnical, consulting, or engineering geology roles.</li><li>Professional Geologist (PG) license required or ability to obtain Utah PG registration within 6 months.</li><li>Strong knowledge of Utah stratigraphy, structural geology, geologic hazards, and hydrogeology.</li><li>Proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS, modeling tools, and standard field logging methods.</li><li>Demonstrated experience writing Phase I/II ESA reports, geologic hazard evaluation reports, and geotechnical characterization summaries.</li><li>Ability to lead field investigations in rugged Utah terrain and travel as needed.</li><li>Excellent communication, leadership, and technical report writing skills.</li></ul><hr/><h2>Preferred Experience</h2><ul><li>Environmental sampling methods, groundwater monitoring, and remediation support.</li><li>Mining or oil & gas site characterization experience in Utah or the Intermountain West.</li><li>Familiarity with UGS guidelines, DEQ regulations, USACE requirements, and local permitting processes.</li><li>Project management experience with direct client contact.</li><li>Proficiency with CAD or geologic modeling software.</li></ul><hr/><h2>Work Environment</h2><ul><li>Office and field-based role with regular site visits across Utah.</li><li>Field conditions may include extreme heat/cold, steep terrain, remote areas, and construction sites.</li><li>Occasional overtime or overnight travel required based on project needs.</li></ul><hr/><h2>About CMT Technical Services</h2>CMT Technical Services provides full-service geotechnical engineering, environmental consulting, construction materials testing, and special inspection services across Utah and the Intermountain West. **Job Description**
 
AECOM is seeking a **Geologist** to join our West Region and support a diverse portfolio of mining and infrastructure projects. In this role, you will contribute to field investigations, data analysis, and technical reporting that inform critical project decisions from early planning through execution. This position offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment while gaining exposure to a wide range of geological settings, project types, and clients. **Key Responsibilities**
 
**Technical Work**
 
+ Conduct geological fieldwork, including core and cuttings logging, site mapping, sampling, and field investigations in support of mining and infrastructure projects.
 
+ Collect, compile, and analyze geological, geochemical, and geotechnical data to support project interpretation and decision-making.
 
+ Support the development and refinement of geological interpretations, cross-sections, and conceptual models.
 
+ Assist with resource modeling activities, data validation, and interpretation under the guidance of senior technical staff.
 
+ Apply established procedures, standards, and best practices to ensure accuracy, consistency, and quality of geological data and deliverables.
 
**Project Support and Collaboration**
 
+ Assist with preparation of technical reports, figures, tables, and supporting documentation for client deliverables.
 
+ Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including mining engineers, environmental scientists, geotechnical engineers, and planners.
 
+ Support project teams with data management, document control, and coordination of technical inputs.
 
+ Participate in project meetings, site visits, and internal reviews as required.
 
+ Support adherence to project schedules, quality standards, and health and safety requirements.
 
**Qualifications**
 
**Minimum Requirements**
 
+ Bachelor’s degree in Geology or a related discipline and 4+ years of professional geological experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
 
**Preferred Qualifications**
 
+ 8+ years of experience supporting geological investigations for mining, infrastructure, or environmental projects.
 
+ Demonstrated field experience, including geological logging, sampling programs, and site investigations.
 
+ Strong data analysis skills with experience handling geological and geochemical datasets.
 
+ Familiarity with geological modeling, data management, or visualization software.
 
+ Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate technical information clearly.
 
**Additional Information**
 
Offered rate of compensation will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The range for this position is $72000 to $100000.
