Higher-Ed Jobs Overview

Higher education (Higher-ed) professionals are the professors, administrators, and researchers who interact with postsecondary students who are looking to make their mark in the world. Higher-ed jobs are often found in colleges, universities, career schools, or technical/trade schools; duties may include planning lessons, providing support, and instructing students with the best learning materials available. These jobs are available to competent, personable, and well-organized job seekers who have completed a post-bachelor's degree.

When you become a postsecondary professor, administrator, or researcher, you help shape the next generation of professionals. You may be a history, science, or business professor or the head of a specialized department. As an administrator, you may help prospective students apply for college and ensure that they have the credentials they need to get admitted.

Working as a higher-ed professional offers a decent salary and plenty of employment opportunities. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 9% increase in new postsecondary teaching jobs within the next 10 years.

Want to expand your search of higher-ed jobs? Monster offers listings of these positions:

Higher-Ed Education and Skills

Higher-ed jobs often require post-bachelor education such as a master’s degree, doctorate, or Ph.D. Candidates who have a master's degree may find a teaching job at a community college, career school, or technical school. Most colleges that offer undergraduate or graduate degrees prefer candidates who hold a doctorate or Ph.D.

A specialized license or certification may be necessary depending on the occupation you plan to train students for. For example, special licenses are needed for nursing and teaching. Professors who prepare students for either of these professions likely need to be licensed as well.

Prior teaching or hands-on work experience isn't always a requirement when looking for higher-ed jobs. However, many institutions will hire experienced candidates over those without experience. For example, a candidate who has prior education experience will have a better chance of getting hired for a professor of education than one who doesn't. Candidates who have postgraduate research experience are more likely to get hired as professors of biology or chemistry.

Critical thinking, analytical skills, and exceptional oral and written communication are key to working in higher-ed. Organizational skills are also necessary. For example, a professor will need to plan and prepare for each lesson ahead of time.
