Other duties are management of patient with drains or tubes (feeding, lavage, PEG), catheters (urethral, suprapubic, 3-way irrigation), those requiring laboratory tests or specimens, administration of blood and blood products, and preparation of patient for transfer to another unit or hospital. The MCU nurse is responsible for patient/family teaching, participating in Quality control, narcotic counts, checking physician orders, reviewing previous test results, and understands significance.
