A global leader in combating antisemitism, countering extremism and battling bigotry wherever and whenever it happens, ADL works to protect democracy and ensure a just and inclusive society for all.  PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Online Hate and Extremism Analyst will be responsible for researching, and analyzing the trends and tactics used by malicious actors to promote hate and false narratives online. This includes, but is not limited to, using tools to collect and analyze social and news media content, and assessing trends related to how extremist movements and groups are evolving in online spaces. The Online Hate and Extremism Analyst will develop and report findings to relevant agency staff and external partners and participate in planning and carrying out responses to research findings.

Responsibilities:
Primary:<ul><li>Investigate how extremists use and are influenced by trending content, false narratives and emerging technologies like AI;</li><li>Identify and analyze the impact of online hate on extremist activities;</li><li>Identify and analyze how promoters of hate exploit social media, online games and other online services to harass communities, spread hateful narratives and evade content moderation;</li><li>Gather information from a wide variety of sources, including traditional media, AI tools, social media, community run spaces and open-source intelligence;</li><li>Help develop qualitative and quantitative analysis of subject area, potentially with the use of a range of technical tools;</li><li>Develop background and briefing materials for agency staff and external partners, including law enforcement, via written reports and verbal presentations;</li><li>Assist in planning and executing ADL responses to research findings;</li><li>Produce reports, articles, letters, blogs and other materials, potentially in tandem with other analysts and subject matter experts across COE;</li><li>Present finding to various internal and external audiences.</li></ul>Secondary: <ul><li>Respond to requests for information and research from staff, as well as various outside constituents and partners;</li><li>Take on additional research projects.</li></ul> 

Qualifications:
Primary<ul><li>Experience with social media listening tools and OSINT techniques and tools;</li><li>Familiarity with research and analytical tools at-large, and ability and willingness to learn new technologies quickly;</li><li>Established familiarity with issues related to propaganda, extremism and developments in the world of content moderation;</li><li>Ability to switch between quantitative and qualitative analytical lenses;</li><li>Ability to thrive in a demanding, fast-paced multi-tasking environment;</li><li>Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in teams;</li><li>Excellent research skills, on traditional and online platforms;</li><li>Excellent analytical and writing skills;</li><li>Ability to demonstrate good judgment under pressure.</li></ul>Secondary<ul><li>Familiarity with Python or similar programming languages </li><li>Familiarity with AI benchmarking and testing </li></ul> Work Experience:<ul><li>Several years' experience with a demonstrable increase in skills and responsibility in advocacy or policy-oriented research environment, journalism, or social sciences research or equivalent experience required</li></ul> Education:  <ul><li>Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; graduate degree preferred</li></ul> Work Environment:  <ul><li>ADL is a hybrid environment; this role will require 3 days in person.  </li></ul>Compensation:  <ul><li>This position has a salary range of $65,000 to $75,000. She is the PI of the NIA-funded Geriatric Emergency care Applied Research (GEAR) Network and is currently the MPI of NIA-funded GEAR 2.0 Advancing Dementia Care and GEAR 1.1, Geriatric Emergency care Applied Research Network: Expanding and sustaining an emergency care aging study infrastructure. Among her GEAR initiatives is the creation of the GEAR Database, a cloud-based, multi-site research infrastructure supporting patient-centered data for evaluation of interventions and characteristics aimed at providing improved care for older adults in the Emergency Department (ED). The GEAR Database, while still expanding, currently comprises 12 health systems representing more than 63 EDs. Additional information about these studies is available in the NIH RePORTER.The ideal candidate will be highly organized, adept in quantitative data analysis, and have significant research experience. The Senior Research Scientist must be able to function proficiently and independently. The Senior Research Scientist should be able to work autonomously, while maintaining effective communication with the PI, Program Manager, data analysts, collaborators, and business partners. In addition to the studies described above, the Senior Research Scientist may also be asked to assist with other studies led by Dr. Hwang related to geriatric emergency medicine. Job Responsibilities:Understand the big picture and ensure completion of project activities on time and with fidelity to funders expectations. Lead data acquisition and storage, including completing applicable data use agreements and ensuring compliance with funder requirements for data sharing. Assist with data quality monitoring. Conduct data analyses ranging from data aggregation to complex modeling to interactive data visualization using various data sources. Review and interpret analytic requests with stakeholders including study team requesters, IT colleagues, data owners, and database collaborators. Assist with managing budgets for all funded projects, including tracking expenditures, and making budget recommendations that are needed to remain on or under budget for the budget period. Help facilitate and develop agendas and materials for regular meetings with co-investigators, collaborators, and funders. Serve as a resource and participate in study initiation and close out duties. Assist with regulatory requirements including IRB protocols and submissions, DSSB submissions, facilitate grants/agreements and subawards in partnership with Grant Manager and Contracts Manager.
