Med-Surg assignments include oncology patients (including neutropenic and post-operative patients), psychiatric patients, general medical-surgical patients (including post-operative, COPD, CHF, sepsis, DVT, AKI, dialysis, and COVID cases), orthopedic patients (including total joints, post-surgical patients, and general medical overflow), and palliative patients (including pneumonia, sepsis, CHF, COPD, AKI, DVT, PE, occasional surgical cases, and COVID); COVID is common on the Med-Surg floor. Patient ratios vary by assignment: ICU is 1:2 based on acuity; PCU and CCU are 1:4 depending on acuity or if a patient is discharging; medical and surgical are 1:5; ED holding has ICU patients at 1:2, PCU patients at 1:4, and MS patients at 1:5; rehab uses a 2:8 team model (RN, LPN, tech).
