The position is a full-time role (40 hours a week) working in the IDOT District One office in the Bureau of Design, Project Support Section, Railroad Unit. The successful candidate will perform various tasks including project coordination with the IDOT Project Manager, design consultants and railroad staff.  This position will assist with the IDOT at-grade crossing program and implementing public improvements on the State highway system.  This individual will use engineering skills to understand and interpret roadway plan drawings and specifications to facilitate improvements to the State highway system. The candidate will work with the IDOT Project Manager and the design consultant in coordinating public improvements with railroads.  This coordination would range from preliminary concept design and geometry layout to detailed contract plans and specifications for reconstruction, widening and bridge replacements that impact railroad facilities. This would include attending design meetings and facilitating solutions to design and scheduling issues and questions. The candidate will assist in the development of the at-grade crossing safety improvement program. Additional duties would include preparing responses to public inquiries, inspecting railroad crossings conditions, and construction management of field improvements by the railroad forces on the State highway system.  The candidate will be required to coordinate with local governments on detour routes for proposed grade crossing replacement.  The candidate will review force account bills and process work for payment by railroads on safety crossing improvements.  The candidate will work with IDOT’s Central Office and Chief Counsel in coordination of Railroad Agreements.  This individual may be asked to testify at ICC Hearings regarding public improvements.  A candidate with a background working with IDOT in preliminary engineering, development of plans or construction is recommended. This individual may be asked to prepare sketches and plan diagrams for at-grade crossing, so a base level knowledge of CADD would be beneficial in the execution of duties.  The individual will be called upon to collaborate closely with other teams on multi-disciplinary projects.  In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following: <ul><li>Analyzes information and data to perform routine design tasks.</li><li>Makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods.</li><li>Responsible for accuracy of engineering design and plans, quality presentation, thoroughness and follow-through, and efficient conformance to budgets, schedules, and company standards.</li><li>Reviews design options and document findings from the design team.</li><li>An understanding of OpenRoads is preferred.</li><li>Manages workload and any changes in project schedule or scope or additional services.</li></ul>:

Apply now and become a part of our exciting journey! Job Summary:The Railroad Track Specialist will inspect railroad tracks to ensure compliance with applicable railroad standards, state regulations, and the FRA Track Safety Standards Part 213 Subpart A-F. They will produce reports for all tracks inspected, noting all non-compliant conditions found and providing suggested corrective/remedial actions. This position communicates regularly with their direct supervisor and completes weekly/daily reports as required. The Railroad Track Specialist plays an integral role in developing and maintaining the RailPros client relationship. Essential Duties & Responsibilities:• Inspect railroad track structure (primarily on foot) for compliance with railroad standards, state regulations, & FRA Track Safety Standards Part 213 Subpart A-F
• Detect deviations from federal (FRA Track Safety Standards Part 213 Subpart A-F)/state regulations and identify areas requiring repair or maintenance
• Implement remedial action on defects, pending repair
• Comply with all railroad/client safety rules, FRA guidelines, and RailPros policies and procedures
• Provide clear written and verbal communication of track conditions
• Produce accurate and detailed reports for all tracks inspected
• Participate in derailment investigations if required

As an RWIC, you will be responsible for job site coordination, dispatcher/train communication, and various forms of On-Track Safety in both controlled and non-controlled track areas. Essential Duties & Responsibilities:• Jobsite Protection: Deliver required protection for each assignment, ensuring error-free compliance with rules, including radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers. Ensure work groups are clear of limits during train movements and grant permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed.
• Daily Briefings: Conduct daily job briefings with all personnel on-site to ensure adherence to railroad safety requirements.
• Documentation: Prepare and submit electronic forms such as job set-up forms, daily work reports, invoices, and other required reports.
• Tool Handling: Handle and place signs, derail, and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds, as needed.
• Safety Training: Actively participate in routine safety classes and qualification training.
• Communication: Maintain a high level of communication with RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules.
• Additional Duties: Perform other tasks as assigned to meet business needs. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:• Ability to meet the physical demands of the role and effectively warn roadway workers of approaching trains.
• Understanding of on-track safety training and qualification requirements.
• Proficiency in radio procedures for communication with RWIC/EICs (Employee in Charge) and work groups.
• Competence in conducting job briefings and placing railroad advance warning and stop signs.
• Capability to install a railroad derail and apply the locking device.
• Proficiency with electronic communications, including email and text, and standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite). Required Education and Experience:High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
Minimum of 3 years of Class 1 Railroad experience, preferably within the Maintenance of Way (MOW) department. Preferred Education and Experience:3 to 5 years of railroad track maintenance experience.
Prior experience with a railway company.
