The Student Machinist provides high school seniors and adult education trade students the opportunity to gain hands-on machining processes experience in a manufacturing environment. Under close supervision, the student will support machining operations by performing foundational tasks on manual mills, lathes, and grinders, while also learning basic CNC functions such as loading and saving programs and basic operation. This role develops core machining skills under close supervision, contributing to part production, shop organization, and safe work practices.SUMMARY: The Student Machinist is an entry-level position responsible for assisting with machining processes across manual mills, lathes, grinders, and basic CNC operations. Duties include performing manual milling and turning tasks, precision drilling and boring, wheel dressing, flat surface grinding, and other shop-floor operations. The student machinist also learns to load and save CNC programs through the DNC system and gains experience in precision locating, thread cutting, and part inspection. Duties, responsibilities, activities, physical demands, and work environment may change at any time with or without notice. ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:·        Perform basic grinding tasks including wheel dressing, operating a flat surface grinder, and side grinding widths.·        Perform manual milling tasks such as side milling, face milling, drilling, precision hole locating, and boring head operations.·        Perform manual lathe tasks including OD turning, center drilling, ID boring, thread cutting, and the use of both 3-jaw and 4-jaw chucks.·        Use precision measuring tools to inspect parts for accuracy.·        Operate CNC machinery under direct supervision.·        Load and save CNC programs from/to the DNC system under supervision.·        Change inserts and make basic adjustments to support machining operations.·        Follow all shop safety protocols and procedures while working under close supervision.·        Complete accurate ERP transactions for material usage, production reporting, and time tracking to support inventory accuracy and cost control.·        Meet or exceed established productivity and quality standards that support departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), ensuring efficient and accurate job performance.·        Consistently apply safe work practices in accordance with company policies to promote a zero lost time environment and maintain a safe workplace.EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS: Applicants must be current high school seniors or adult education students enrolled in an accredited vocational trade school or equivalent hands-on experience. Welding coursework required; prior experience in steel/aluminum manufacturing and familiarity with Stick, MIG, TIG, and Flux core welding techniques is beneficial but not required.

The Student Welder position provides high school seniors and adult education trade students in welding programs with hands-on welding and fabrication experience in a manufacturing environment. Under close supervision, the Student Welder will assist in welding grating products according to job traveler instructions and quality standards. This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop practical skills while contributing to Ohio Gratings’ mission and values.Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesMaterial Preparation and Welding<ul><li>Assist in preparing metal components by cleaning, cutting, and positioning materials according to job traveler instructions and drawing specifications.</li><li>Work alongside team members to lay out, assemble, and weld grating products within specified tolerances.</li><li>Operate MIG welding equipment to fabricate products according to quality standards, ensuring consistency and precision.</li><li>Perform grinding to ensure clean, precise edges and surfaces on fabricated components, contributing to high-quality output.</li><li>Participate in scrap reduction initiatives by minimizing waste during welding and fabrication processes.</li></ul>ERP System Usage<ul><li>Use the Epicor ERP system to log materials, time, and inventory accurately, assisting in job progress tracking and project management.</li></ul>Quality, Inspection, and Continuous Training<ul><li>Perform visual inspections on welds to ensure they meet quality standards.</li><li>Work closely with the Quality team and Welding Trainer to improve welding skills and focus on precision.</li><li>Participate in training sessions to advance welding techniques and fabrication knowledge, continually building on your skillset.</li></ul>Safety and Maintenance<ul><li>Follow all safety procedures, use appropriate PPE, and be mindful of potential hazards, such as UV light, heat, and fumes.</li><li>Maintain a clean and organized workstation, promptly reporting any equipment issues to supervision.</li><li>Safely operate material handling equipment and power tools (e.g., saws, grinders, presses, routers) as permitted and trained.</li></ul>Teamwork and Communication<ul><li>Work effectively both independently and as part of a team, following instructions from supervisors and team members.</li><li>Communicate clearly and professionally to support a positive work environment and collaborative atmosphere.</li></ul>Housekeeping and Additional Tasks<ul><li>Keep workstations and tools clean and organized, practicing good housekeeping.</li><li>Support inventory management and cleanliness efforts as directed.</li><li>Cross-train in various functions as assigned by the supervisor to broaden your skills and knowledge base.</li></ul>Education, Experience, and Skills RequirementsEducation:<ul><li>Must be a current high school senior or enrolled in a welding trade school program.
