Description:
ASE is looking for an Environmental, Health and Safety Inspector to work in Suffolk, VA.  The EH&S Inspector is responsible for promoting an Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) stewardship throughout the company while inspecting and providing EH&S guidance and support to the workforce. Supports the development of EH&S programs and projects. Ensures that the company maintains compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local regulations. Promotes a total EH&S culture of ownership and accountability for the safety of all workers and protection of the environment. Supports and commits to the organizational and company’s mission, vision, and values. Responsible for ensuring that all safety legislation is adhered to, and policies and practices are followed. Implement, monitor, and review the protective and preventative measures that companies are required or choose to follow, and work to minimize operational losses, occupational health problems, accidents, and injuries. Carrying out risk assessments and considering how risks could be reduced. Responsibilities:
<ul><li>Conduct daily inspections of assigned areas ensuring that all operations follow Federal, State, and local regulations and Akima Systems Engineering (ASE) policies and procedures; identify EH&S hazards or deficiencies and initiate corrective action through project supervision.</li><li>Prepare written reports on inspection results (compliant and non-compliant), certifications, accidents, injuries and illnesses investigations, and employee complaints or concerns.</li><li>Establish a close working relationship and communicate with customer-assigned safety representatives and department/ship managers regularly.</li><li>Conduct and document daily safety walkthrough inspections of assigned project. </li><li>Daily walkthroughs will be coordinated with the applicable customer representative as required. </li><li>Safety walks of the work site(s) ensure company compliance with environmental, health and safety hazards.</li><li>Conducts daily inspections of Vessel’s confined spaces.</li><li>Certifies confined space entry onboard the Vessel.</li><li>Keep certificates and records maintained following regulated standards.</li><li>Inspects and maintains fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, and ear plug dispensing stations.</li><li>Maintains MSDS/SDS sheets for assigned contract availabilities in progress.</li><li>Maintains and obtains paint and other installation samples and lab analysis results per assigned availabilities.</li><li>Conduct breathing air surveillance inspections.</li><li>Able to calibrate, use, and operate Air Sampling instruments/meters as needed.</li><li>Ensure inspection of scaffolding systems daily before commencement of work.</li><li>Conduct Industrial lift Equipment spot checks for licenses and ODCL (Operator Daily Check List) completion.</li><li>Helps create and edit new work instructions, procedures, or training materials and participates in training events (leading and attending).</li></ul>

Qualifications:
<ul><li>Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years waterfront Maritime Safety Industry experience.</li><li>Bachelor’s Degree may be substituted with a completed Maritime Trade School/Apprenticeship with 5 years waterfront Maritime Safety Industry OR 4 years military service with specialized training and certifications in Maritime Safety Industry.</li><li>Bachelor’s Degree/Trade School/Military Service may be substituted with GED minimal education and specialized training and certifications in Maritime Safety Industry with 8 years total waterfront experience with 5 years Maritime Safety Industry experience.</li><li>Formal job training and three years' experience in the Maritime Safety Industry.</li><li>DoD Secret clearance (or ability to obtain and maintain a clearance.  Must be able to obtain a CAC card.  </li><li>Must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.</li><li>Must be able to access government installations by obtaining and maintaining a Biometric Defense Identification System (DBIS) credential to perform work on-board US Naval vessels or government assigned work.</li><li>Must be able to acquire and maintain a Competent Person’s Certification while employed as an ASE Safety Inspector.</li><li>Must be able to work overtime and weekends upon managerial request.</li><li>Must be able to travel outside the Suffolk, Virginia area, if required.</li><li>Ability to read and write with understanding, and ability to communicate orally in an effective manner.</li><li>Minimum computer experience required to include Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.</li><li>OSHA 10</li><li>OSHA 30 (preferred)</li><li>Competent Person - Able to maintain annual Competent Person certification and other training related to scope of work.</li><li>Must be familiar with NAVSEA Standard items.</li><li>Knowledge of:<ul><li>Applicable Federal, State, and local HS regulations (1915, 1910, EPA).</li><li>Presentation techniques for EH&S training.</li><li>Techniques used to recognize EH&S hazards and environmental risks.</li><li>Working with and management of hazardous materials and waste.</li><li>Ship configuration, shipbuilding techniques, and operations.</li><li>Safe operational procedures of tools and machinery associated with the work performed by ASE.</li></ul></li><li>Able to think and solve problems, use reference materials, use organizing strategies and use time and resources effectively.</li><li>Capable of interacting with others; promoting customer satisfaction; respects diversity; resolves conflicts.</li><li>Must have the ability to communicate effectively in English in both oral and written applications to successfully interact with management and employees.</li><li>Accident prevention principles, spill mitigation, and their application to industrial operations; to learn techniques of making field inspections, conducting investigations, and identifying hazards; and other relevant skills.</li></ul>Physical Requirements:<ul><li>Must be able to access all work locations, including government and private shipyards and/or vessels.</li><li>While performing the duties of this position, the employee must be able to enter confined spaces, work at heights, and in confining or restricted spaces aboard vessels under construction/repair.</li><li>Daily inspections require entering confined spaces, climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding, observing the use of tools, and operating equipment/machinery.</li><li>Physical dexterity must allow for bending, reaching, climbing, crawling, and working on ladders and scaffolding.</li><li>Must be physically able to walk to all yard locations.</li><li>Must be able to handle stressful situations professionally.</li><li>Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds of weight.</li><li>Visual parameters require the ability to see up close, at a distance, and peripherally, with depth perception and color recognition.</li><li>While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to vapors, gases, dust, welding/burning fumes, and smoke.</li><li>Must be able to spend up to 90% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates.</li><li>The noise level is usually moderate to extremely noisy 90% of the time, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering. </li></ul>
