Front End - Department Assistant Manager
Internal Candidates Only
Purpose: To assist Front End Manager in maintaining high standards of friendly, courteous and prompt customer and member service; be responsible at all times for the cleanliness, safety and security of the store; manage cashiers, registers and customer flow; ensure accuracy of all cash accounts and security of all cash received; manage courtesy desk; member workers and cashiers; maintain schedule for staff and member workers. Complete any other task assigned by manager.
Status: Full time, $25.00/hour exempt, various shifts, nights and weekends required.
Reports to: Front End Manager
Responsibilities:
Customer/Member Service
- To model the highest level of customer service toward all customers.
- To establish customer service as a first priority.
- Answer customer and member questions and/or complaints completely and courteously, or take the questioner to the appropriate person who will provide the answer.
- Promote membership to non-members.
- Provide a welcoming atmosphere for Member Workers.
- Issue refunds.
- Deal with any questions regarding member discounts.
- Courteously direct all patrons to the appropriate bottle return and recyclable container.
- Supervise floor managers, customer service desk workers, cashiers and courtesy clerks.
- Manage "lost and found".
Operations:
- Ensure all spills are cleaned promptly. Assist in maintaining store in a clean and orderly condition.
- Manage shoplifting incidents according to HWFC policies.
- Manage disorderly customers according to HWFC policies.
- Ensure incident reports are filled out in case of accident in the store, and that the paperwork is turned into Administration promptly.
- Work with Front End Manager to maintain procedures to ensure accuracy and security of all cash, daily deposits and paperwork processed by the Front End.
- Assist the Front End Manager in all aspects of running the Front End.
Cashiering
- Provide for regular cashier breaks, as per Coop policy.
- Relay any new pertinent information to cashiers.
- Set-up cash drawers as required.
- Open and close all registers during shift.
- Skim registers of excess bills and checks, when prompted by the system, and place in safe.
- Provide change for cashiers as required.
- Personally transact all pay-outs and non-cash transactions.
- Call manager to cashier as required for customer flow.
- Cashier as required.
- Approve all check overwrites above $10.
- Sign in and out member worker cashiers.
- Maintain register stocks of sale flyers, membership brochures, newsletters, and bag-stuffers.
- Maintain register stocks of reuse grocery bags.
- Provide sanitary cleaning supplies to all register stations and oversee cashier cleaning of register stations
- Receive "bounced check" payments in the absence of the Finance Department.
- Manage "Daily POS Incident Report".
- Carry out opening and closing procedures as established by Coop policy.
Personnel:
- Work with the Front End Manager to develop performance standards and assure on the job training of all Front End Staff and Member Workers.
- Help ensure that hours scheduled at the Front End are within budgetary guidelines.
- Maximize use of Member Workers in Front End staffing.
- Assist Front End Manager with hiring and conducting of timely evaluations of Front End Staff and Member Workers according to HWFC policies.
- Assist Front End Manager with corrective counseling measures and/or disciplinary action and/or termination of employment as needed for all Front End Staff and Member Workers according to HWFC policies.
- Assist Front End Manager with conducting regular department and Front End Management Team meetings.
General
- Be prompt in scheduled start times.
- Attend department meetings.
- Attend Front End Management Team meetings.
- Attend All Staff meetings when possible.
- Work with Front End Manager to establish goals for labor and department; develop annual labor budget according to established productivity, labor and cost goals.
- Perform all duties assigned by the Front End Manager.

Qualifications:
- Retail or other experience serving the public.
- Experience and accuracy with cash handling and numbers.
- Ability to handle multiple simultaneous demands while remaining calm and friendly.
- Project an outgoing, friendly, positive attitude.
- Excellent communication and listening skills.
- Ability to stand up for up to an eight (8) hour shift and an ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
- Ability to work well with others in a cooperative environment where teamwork and constant communication is essential.
- Preferred knowledge of natural foods and the natural foods industry
