Why work for OFM

The Office of Financial Management (OFM)serves as the backbone of Washington state government. Our mission is to make our state a better place by connecting people, budgets, policies, data, and systems for state agencies and the Legislature. Our team includes budget advisors, researchers, and other experts, all dedicated public servants working towards an equitable future for every Washingtonian.

If you want to play a key role in enhancing how state government serves its citizens, you've found the right place. Join us in making a meaningful difference for every Washingtonian!

The job opportunity

We are seeking two IT Associate Project Managers to support the planning, coordination, and delivery of the One Washington project. In this role, you will help establish and maintain project management processes, documentation, controls, and reporting to support effective project delivery. You will collaborate with project teams, stakeholders, and partners to define and track project scope, schedules, budgets, deliverables, dependencies, and milestones. You will also develop and maintain work plans, monitor progress, and adjust plans as priorities and project needs change.

You will maintain project controls, tracking logs, dashboards, and reports in alignment with Strategic Project Management Office standards. You will identify and monitor project risks and issues, coordinate mitigation strategies, and escalate concerns that could affect project goals, timelines, resources, or deliverables. Through meeting coordination, documentation of decisions and action items, and timely communication, you will help teams stay informed, aligned, and focused on shared outcomes.

One Washington (OneWA), led by the Office of Financial Management, is an enterprise-wide transformation project focused on replacing 1960s-era technology with a cloud-based Workday solution for finance, procurement, budget, HR, and payroll processes. OneWA is a long-term, yet extremely fast-paced project anticipated to fully implement all phases by 2030. The project's core business hours are Monday through Friday, and all project positions are full-time. We offer some flexibility in schedules oriented around core business hours with prior supervisory approval. However, it is very common to work beyond the typical 40-hour workweek to meet the rigorous operational needs and business deliverables required for the go-live timelines.

What you'll work on

  • Collaborate with project teams, stakeholders, and collaborators to define and document project scope, schedules, budgets, deliverables, dependencies, and milestones, ensuring a common understanding of project objectives and expectations.
  • Develop, organize, and maintain project work plans and related project management documentation; identify and sequence tasks, track progress, and adjust plans in response to changing conditions, priorities, or project information.
  • Design, implement, and maintain project controls, logs, dashboards, and reporting processes consistent with Strategic Project Management Office standards to provide accurate and timely visibility into project status, scope, schedule, risks, issues, and deliverables.
  • Identify, document, assess, and monitor project risks and issues; develop and track mitigation and response strategies and appropriately escalate matters that may affect project objectives, milestones, resources, or delivery.
  • Coordinate project meetings and working sessions by preparing materials, documenting decisions and action items, and supporting clear communication of project status, priorities, and next steps to project teams, stakeholders, and collaborators.

What we need you to bring

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of project management principles, practices, and tools sufficient to coordinate and manage assigned project activities, maintain project controls, and support effective project delivery.
  • Proficiency in using project management and business productivity tools to independently maintain project information, develop reports and dashboards, and communicate project status and performance.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate assigned project work, including tracking scope, schedules, deliverables, dependencies, and priorities and adjusting plans as project conditions change.
  • Ability to identify, assess, document, and communicate project risks and issues; support the development and tracking of mitigation or response strategies; and appropriately escalate matters that exceed established authority.
  • Ability to communicate and facilitate with diverse project teams, stakeholders, and collaborators to support shared understanding, collaboration, and consensus.
  • The ability to learn and grow: Curious about themselves and others, who take responsibility for knowing their own strengths and weaknesses, and who use their learning to make government programs and processes more efficient and effective to serve all in Washington.
  • The ability to meet the needs of others: Flexible, adaptable, customer-service focused, and willing and able to empathetically respond to the unique needs of the people we work with and serve.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in managing or supporting IT projects in an enterprise resource planning (ERP) or Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) environment. Experience in a public-sector or highly federated organizational environment, particularly an environment involving coordination across multiple agencies, organizations, or business units.
  • Experience in project management within Washington State government or a similarly complex public-sector environment.
  • Experience in applying project management practices across technology, business, change management, or reporting workstreams.
  • Experience in using project management tools such as Microsoft Project, Azure DevOps, or Smartsheet and developing or maintaining project dashboards.
  • Knowledge of Agile project management and iterative software development practices.
  • Experience in risk and issue assessment, analysis, response, and resolution within complex projects.
  • Experience in vendor or partner coordination to monitor deliverables and support project objectives.
  • Project management certification or formal project management training, such as PMI-CAPM, PMI-PMP, or equivalent.

We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job, and that candidate may be one from a less traditional background. Don't let doubts stop you from applying for this position. If you have transferable experience, please tell us about it or contact us with questions about the required qualifications and how your experience relates to them.
