Interim Controller / Accounting Manager

Job Responsibilities

• Lead month-end and year-end close processes, including reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation.
• Oversee program accounting for HUD/PHA-funded operations, including Financial Data Schedule (FDS) support and cost-allocation processes.
• Coordinate with external auditors on audit engagements, including Single Audit/Uniform Guidance where applicable.
• Supervise and review the work of senior and staff accountants supporting the engagement.
• Support specialized accounting and reporting needs as assigned, including affordable housing/LIHTC/PBV work where relevant.
• Implement and maintain internal controls and segregation-of-duties best practices.
• Assist with system conversions, chart-of-accounts mapping, and reporting design (e.g., Yardi, Procontractor).

Requirements

• Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, with demonstrated supervisory ownership of financial close processes.
• Strong working knowledge of GAAP and fund accounting principles.
• Strong communication and client-facing skills; comfortable serving as the primary escalation point for the engagement.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel required).
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.

Preferences

• Experience with Yardi and/or Procontractor is a plus.
• Government, public-sector, or nonprofit accounting experience preferred but not mandatory.
• Affordable housing finance/accounting experience (LIHTC, PBV, RAD, HUD/PHA) preferred but not mandatory.
• CPA or comparable advanced credential preferred but not mandatory.

Work hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM CT. Please note that this position requires candidates to be based in Milwaukee or Wisconsin. Relocation is not accepted, and remote work is not an option. Work authorization required: USC/GC/EAD/H1.
