Job Description

Are you an experienced accounting professional ready to make a meaningful impact at a high-performing specialty insurer? Join Kinsale Insurance, a leading excess and surplus (E&S) lines carrier headquartered in Richmond, VA. We're known for our entrepreneurial culture, industry-leading results, and a disruptive business model built on deep expertise, operational efficiency, and technology as a core competency.

About the Role

As a Senior Accountant, you'll be a key contributor to Kinsale's Finance team — driving the close process, supporting statutory and regulatory reporting, and playing an active role in process improvement initiatives. You'll work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment alongside finance and cross-functional colleagues who value accuracy, initiative, and continuous learning.

What You'll Do

  • Drive the close process through preparation of a broad range of monthly, quarterly, and annual journal entries, including insurance and reinsurance entries, intercompany transactions, expense allocations, tax accruals, and investment activity.
  • Assist with ERP system administration and general-ledger maintenance.
  • Actively participate in identifying and implementing process improvements, including the adoption of AI-driven workflows.
  • Assist with accounting for reinsurance arrangements and related reporting.
  • Prepare internal controls and relevant reporting packages for assigned process areas.
  • Record and report certain compliance-facing tax filings and issue related payments.
  • Serve as a key contributor in the preparation of quarterly statutory reporting schedules.
  • Participate in cross-departmental initiatives and perform ad hoc analyses and other duties as assigned.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or a finance-related field preferred.
  • Two to four years of accounting experience required.
  • CPA designation preferred.
  • Sarbanes-Oxley experience preferred.
  • One to three years of related insurance experience preferred.
  • High degree of accuracy and efficiency, with strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with initiative and the ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills; working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Experience with NetSuite and prior use or implementation of AI tools is a plus.

Why You'll Love Working at Kinsale

  • Competitive Pay & Bonus Opportunities – Rewarding performance and initiative.
  • Comprehensive Benefits – Health, dental, and vision insurance with up to $3,600 (individual) or $7,000 (family) in HSA contributions per year.
  • Work-Life Balance – Generous paid time off including 22 days of PTO and 10 paid company holidays.
  • Career Growth – Clear promotion paths, mentorship, and ongoing professional development.
  • Retirement & Security – Up to 6% matching 401(k) contributions on base salary and bonus, standard life insurance, and disability coverage.
  • Continuous Learning – Annual $3,000 reimbursement for educational training and certifications.

Integrity & Responsibility

Kinsale values strong financial responsibility. A credit check will be conducted as part of the selection process for roles that require sound judgment, trustworthiness, or access to sensitive information.
