Join a growing real estate investment and asset management organization seeking an experienced Senior Property Accountant to support a diverse portfolio of commercial and investment properties. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with operations, finance, lenders, investors, and external partners while contributing to financial reporting, portfolio performance, and process improvement initiatives.
Position Summary
The Senior Property Accountant is responsible for overseeing accounting and financial reporting activities for an assigned portfolio of properties and related investment entities. This position plays a key role in maintaining financial accuracy, supporting month-end and year-end close processes, analyzing property performance, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and reporting requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Property Accounting
Maintain accurate accounting records and financial reporting for an assigned portfolio.
Review and interpret financial agreements, ownership structures, and reporting requirements.
Monitor accounts receivable, accounts payable, cash activity, reserve balances, and other key financial metrics.
Review and approve invoices and vendor payments in a timely manner.
Collaborate with property operations teams to resolve accounting issues and discrepancies.
Analyze tenant accounts, lease activity, and occupancy-related transactions.
Review and reconcile operating expense recoveries and common area maintenance (CAM) calculations.
Monitor capital project expenditures and reserve account activity.
Investment & Entity Accounting
Record and reconcile equity investments, capital contributions, and distributions.
Manage intercompany transactions and cash movements between related entities.
Reconcile investment balances and ownership interests.
Assist with management fee calculations and investment reporting.
Month-End Close & Financial Reporting
Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts.
Review bank reconciliations and resolve outstanding reconciling items.
Prepare monthly financial packages and variance analyses.
Investigate and resolve accounting issues in partnership with internal and external stakeholders.
Assist with lender, investor, and management reporting requirements.
Quarterly & Annual Responsibilities
Prepare quarterly financial statements and supplemental schedules.
Complete recurring compliance and reporting requirements.
Support annual audits by preparing schedules and responding to auditor requests.
Assist with the preparation of financial statements and note disclosures.
Review tax-related work products prepared by external service providers.
Process Improvement & Team Support
Apply GAAP principles to resolve accounting and reporting issues.
Identify opportunities to improve processes, controls, and efficiencies.
Participate in special projects and ad hoc financial analyses.
Mentor and support junior accounting staff.
Assist with review of accounting workpapers and supporting documentation.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
3+ years of accounting experience; real estate or property accounting experience preferred.
Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
Experience with ERP, accounting, or CRM systems preferred.
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
