Outside machinists operate a wide variety of tools and machinery ranging from wrenches and screwdrivers to complex and sophisticated equipment such as saws, drill presses, optical equipment, mills, portable machines, boring equipment, precision grinders, and lathes. Outside machinists are responsible for installing, grooming, testing, and repairing a ships major mechanical components and systems and work can occur on commercial or naval ships in various stages of new construction, overhaul, or repair.
