About Working in Knoxville, Tennessee
Knoxville is known by many names: K-town, Knox Vegas, Scruffy City. Its nickname in the 19th century was "Marble City," which had nothing to do with the little glass balls popular with 12-year-olds. It came from the pink and gray stone from the Ross Quarry and Mead's Quarry used to build iconic buildings like the J.P. Morgan Library in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. In their time, the quarries sustained hundreds of dangerous Knoxville jobs in production and transportation. Today, the area has been transformed into a nature center.
The city is also famous for two other kinds of spheres. Bowling is Knoxville's oldest sport, and the Bowling Saloon on Market Square was a busy entertainment venue in the 1850s. Through the years, the sport has remained a popular pastime in Knoxville. Knoxville's other sphere of note is the Golden Globe, or Sunsphere, that was built for the 1982 World's Fair. The sphere is 75 feet in diameter and 266 feet tall, with reflective glass panels layered with real gold dust. If you want to get the ball rolling on finding a job in Knoxville, be sure to look around in Johnson City, Kingsport, and Nashville, as well.
