Golf Course Jobs Overview

Do you wish you could spend your days at the golf course instead of going to work? Then it might be time to turn the course into your workplace. There are many types of golf course jobs, ranging from entry-level roles to management positions.

A job on the golf course is ideal if you prefer working outdoors instead of in an office, enjoy being physically active at work, and are service-minded. Working at a golf course could mean being at a golf club or golf resort. These are the most common jobs you’ll find there:

  • Golf cart attendant: Your main responsibility will be maintaining the golf carts, for example cleaning and inspecting them and performing simple maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Golf caddie: Golf caddies carry bags and golf clubs. You will be handing golfers their clubs, cleaning clubs, and maintaining the golf course. More experienced golf caddies also offer their golfers advice on which clubs to use for different shots.
  • Club ranger: Club rangers are responsible for the operation of the golf course. You will be making sure that golfers follow the rules and help them out if they have questions or concerns.
  • Grounds crew: Also called grounds keepers or greenskeepers, in this role you’ll set up and maintain the golf course.
  • Golf assistant: A golf assistant provides customer service to golfers and oversees the operations of the golf course, for example by scheduling tee times, managing inventory, and organizing events.
  • Management positions: Managers supervise other staff as well as the operations of the golf course, club, and shop. They may be responsible for budgeting, events, marketing, and sales. Some examples are head golf professional and golf course manager.

Training and Skills for Golf Course Jobs

A college degree is rarely required in this field but could be needed for some management jobs. Soft skills and personality are more important than hard skills for many golf jobs. The industry requires a service-minded personality and good communication skills, as you often work closely with golfers. You should also be detail-oriented to learn and enforce golf course rules and help golfers with questions about equipment and tee times.

Some positions require more golf knowledge than others; if you work as a golf caddy, for example, you should know common lingo, the difference between clubs and other game basics. It is common to start early in the day for most golf course jobs, so it is ideal if you are a morning person. Some jobs require that you are in good health and able lift a specific weight.

Update Your Golf Job Resume

Your cover letter gives you a good opportunity to describe why you want to work on the golf course. While an interest in golf is not always required, you will be a stronger candidate if you have a passion for the sport. Describe your previous golf experience, if any, in your application.

Your job application should also include common elements of strong cover letters and resumes in general. Read Monster’s resume writing tips and tips for writing the best cover letter for more details on what you should include and how.

Interviewing for a Job in Golf

The questions you will be asked in an interview for a golf job will vary greatly depending on what job you are applying to, but you should be ready to discuss golfing in general and the employer specifically. These are some examples of potential interview questions:

  • What do you know about different types of golf clubs?
  • What is your golf handicap?
  • Who is your favorite golfer?
  • What do you know about our golf club?
