Education and Skills for Health Coaching Jobs

Health coach isn’t a regulated title, so you don’t have to meet any specific requirements to call yourself a health coach; however, meeting certain standards will help you serve your clients better and succeed on the job market. Common majors for health coaches are health science, health management, or health or wellness coaching.

Becoming a board-certified health coach through the National Board of Health and Wellness Coaching means you’ll be eligible to bill health insurance companies for your services, which increases the likelihood of getting hired as a health coach.

These are the steps to getting certified for health and wellness coach jobs:

  • Complete an NBHWC-approved training program.
  • Have an associate degree or 4,000 hours of work experience.
  • Complete 50 health and wellness coaching sessions that meet NBHWC requirements.

There are also other agencies that offers alternative accreditations, for example the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools.

To work in health coaching, you’ll need to have a keen interest and understanding of health, wellness, and nutrition. You’ll also thrive in this field if have a motivating and goal-oriented personality, are empathetic and a good listener, and have great organizational skills, so you can plan a regimen for your clients and document their progress.
