The technician assists in various types of procedures such as bronchial alveolar lavage, brushings, endobronchial biopsies, transbronchial biopsies, needle aspiration biopsies, as well as more advanced procedures such as electromagnetic navigation, endobronchial ultrasound, stent placements, and related pulmonary procedures, including pleural procedures, by supporting equipment and supply readiness, set-up, turnover, and transport of equipment and supplies. Set up, assist, and clean up after procedures: The bronchoscopy technician prepares for and assists with bronchoscopies, administration of local anesthesia to patients, explaining the procedure and goal of anesthesia to patients, addressing their concerns and anxieties, with knowledge of its toxicity and adverse effects, monitoring vital signs, and collaborating with the nurse and physician on administration of conscious sedation.

p>Involves provision of laboratory processing services and information for patient diagnosis and treatment by performing laboratory tests in toxicology, chemistry, hematology, immunology, and microbiology laboratories; receiving, typing, testing, and recording blood bank inventories, phlebotomy services, specimen collection, specimen processing and simple processing.

Under general supervision, the Hospital Laboratory Technician 2 perform a wide variety of repetitive technical procedures at the operational level of skill; or perform a limited variety of repetitive but specialized laboratory procedures requiring a high level of skill, finesse, and judgment in one specialized field of work.

p>Direct/Indirect patient care:

• For inpatient services: Making rounds, observing patients in seclusion and /or restraints, assisting patients with hygiene, monitoring and assisting with meals, escorting patients to appointments, taking vital signs, obtaining/transporting specimens, assisting patients in doing laundry or retrieving personal belongings from lockers, assisting in assaultive situations, talking with patients, participating in groups with Rehabilitation therapies staff; Documentation of rounds, seclusion/restraint checks, nutritional intake, vital signs, intake and output, calorie count, level of activity; communication of observations and any abnormal findings to the RN.

• Uses effective communication skills with patients and staff; demonstrates proper telephone techniques and etiquette; acts as an escort to any patient or family member needing directions; shows sensitivity to differences of culture; demonstrates a positive and supportive manner in which patients / families/ colleagues perceive interactions as positive and supportive.
