Localization Jobs Overview

As more and more US companies decide to expand and send their products and services abroad, localization jobs play a crucial part in their success or failure. With a projected growth rate at 24%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), localization translators are among some of the most sought-after professionals. Localization is a fine and complex art. It’s not a simple translation to a target language. Instead, it involves a real adaptation of texts, graphics, and concepts from one culture to another. For instance, it must take into consideration that what is acceptable in one culture, might not be in another, and it must be able to adapt precise cultural or historical cues that might not exist across different countries. Ultimately, the content must look like it was originally created in the target language.

Some of the projects that localization experts typically work on are:

  • movies
  • videogames
  • books
  • marketing campaign materials
  • product manuals
  • websites
  • apps

Is localization not quite what you are looking for? Explore other communications job offers on Monster such as:

Localization Jobs Education and Skills

Localization translators need proficiency in at least two languages and generally a bachelor’s degree as a minimum. Foreign languages, translation and interpreting, communication or linguistics are usually preferred, but technical or scientific degrees can be quite useful as well depending on the single company needs. Truly bi- or multilingual individuals with rare language combinations might also be able to score a job in localization without a degree. In these cases, they usually benefit from courses to make up the technical software knowledge they lack.

On top of that, successful localization experts also need soft skills such as:

  • cultural sensitivity
  • attention to detail
  • time management
  • flexibility
  • self-motivation
  • teamwork

Update Your Localization Job Resume

When it comes to creating the best resume to land a localization job, it is important to remember that this document should always be relevant and not overly long. Shoot for a maximum of one or two pages and organize your content in clear sections. Your experience section should generally stay at the beginning, just after your contact details and personal profile. Moreover, for every job experience try and include numbers and percentages about your performance to quantify your accomplishments. Are you freshly graduated and applying for an entry-level job? Since your education section is probably more packed than your experience one, switch their positions to focus on that. Need more resume writing tips? Monster has plenty of articles to help.

Want to catch recruiters’ attention when filling out your application? Write a compelling cover letter that clearly explains what you can bring to the company and what that position would mean for your career development.

Interviewing for a Localization Job

If you are applying for a job in localization, chances are that it might be a remote position. If that is indeed the case, be prepared to tackle a video interview. Just like when you prepare for any interview, here too you should try and rehearse your answers for the most common questions. From the basics such as “tell me about yourself” to the most advanced behavioral questions, Monster’s got you covered with many articles to break down how to construct your answers and what errors to avoid.

How Much Do Localization Jobs Pay?

Translators specializing in localization earn a median hourly estimate of $22. Ultimately, though, the salary of these professionals depends on the experience gained and the field of localization. Check out Monster’s Salary Tool to find out what you can expect to make as a localization expert in your area, or what skills to further develop to progress in your career.

Want to Learn More About a Company You’re Interested In?
