Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Inspects, diagnoses and repairs mechanical defects in automobiles, trucks, graders, rollers, and a variety of diesel and gasoline-powered equipment tears down motors and performs general overhauling; repairs transmissions, differentials, carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, lights, steering gears, starters, alternators, universal joints, sirens, and hydraulic systems; aligns wheels, adjusts brakes; repairs auxiliary equipment such as hydraulic pumps and motors; builds specialized equipment; installs batteries, tires, wiring, automatic electronic systems, and brakes; welds and cuts with electric and acetylene; occasionally makes emergency repairs out of the shop. Ability to drive and possess a valid California Operator's license for the type of equipment driven (Class B); ability to work in a variety of confined spaces and positions, and work outside in inclement weather; ability to do heavy lifting; ability to perform work that is labor intensive with considerable bending and stooping and repetitive shoulder, arm and hand motions; must have a great deal of finger dexterity; ability to distinguish color of wires; ability to read and understand written work orders and shop manuals, and communicate with various division employees, parts houses and vendors in order to obtain parts and effect repairs.
