The CICU nursing staff are highly skilled in the care for critically ill patients, and are trained to specialize in the care of specific devices, such as Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, Impella, and Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD), along with critical care lines and interventions such as Swan-Ganz catheters, arterial lines, central lines, ventilators, dialysis, and targeted temperature management. The Cardiac ICU (CICU) or Coronary ICU (CCU) at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is a 15-bed intensive care unit that specializes in the care of patients experiencing cardiogenic shock, myocardial infarction, heart failure, arrythmias, and cardiac arrest, among other diagnoses.
