Occupational Therapy Assistant Training and Skills
An occupational therapy assistant needs an associate degree that usually takes two years to complete at a community college or technical school. Part of this education is 16 weeks of hands-on experience in a healthcare facility plus classroom courses that include:

Many OTAs go on to become occupational therapists. Some schools offer bridge programs that prepare you specifically for this career progression.
All states regulate OTAs’ practice. Most states do this by requiring graduating occupational therapy assistants to obtain a license by passing the NBCOT (National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy) exam. This also allows you to use the COTA (Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant) designation. You’ll take continuing education courses to maintain your license. You can also choose to study and get a license for specialized areas of occupational therapy including feeding, eating, swallowing, and low vision.
