The following statements are the essential functions to be performed by an individual assigned to this job: • Must be able to communicate in a courteous, effective, and professional manner in-person, by telephone, two-way radio, and electronic media • Respond to requests for assistance • Respond to emergency calls, fire alarms, intrusion alarms on campus • Conduct health and safety checks as required • Prepare a daily log of shift activities and write incident reports • Work closely with local police and fire agencies • Represent the Institute in its relationships with the community, government agencies, professional societies, and other groups • Ability to testify in court • Stay current with best practices in campus safety/security and campus community-oriented policing strategies • Stay current with the best practices in first responder strategies • Participate in crime analysis and prepare crime data • Perform miscellaneous duties as requested. Duties of this classification include: • Protecting life and property • Preventing crime • Ensuring a safe learning environment • Making scheduled rounds, both on- and off-campus, and outside campus buildings, to maintain a secure environment • Investigating reports of crime • Primary response to high security labs and research facilities • Assisting Environmental Health and Safety professionals • Delivering service in a courteous manner; informs, guides, directs or otherwise assists residents, visitors, staff, or vendors respectfully and congenially to protect and present the best possible image of Caltech • Assisting with daily door monitoring checks; maintains departmental emergency equipment and supplies to ensure proper functioning; ensures compliance with policies and procedures • Reporting all discrepancies and unsafe conditions • Working in a patrol or support function.
