Speech Pathologist Jobs Overview
Disorders and impediments related to speech, linguistics, phonetics, and swallowing afflict a large enough swath of the population that the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) foresees a much-faster-than-average growth outlook of 29% for speech pathologist jobs over the next decade. Also called speech-language pathologists (SLPs), these medical professionals provide treatment and counseling to address communication disabilities caused by diverse factors—from dementia, developmental hindrances, and brain injuries to autism, stroke, and surgery.
Their duties include:

- discussing goals and anticipated results from treatment

Speech Pathologist Education and Skills
Higher education is essential in the field of speech pathology, as you’ll need at least a master’s degree. Try first getting a bachelor’s in psychology, education, linguistics, or communication sciences and disorders, and then you can enroll in a graduate program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.
Here are examples of graduate courses you may take:
- Neurological Bases of Communication
- Language-Learning in School-Aged Children
- Adult Cognition and Communication
- Phonological Disorders
- Fluency Disorders
- Vocal and Velopharyngeal Disorders
You’ll likely study alternative methods of communication too, and also gain some clinical experience (under supervision). Then, you’ll need to look into your particular state’s regulations before you can apply to speech pathologist jobs. Most will require licensure, while others will mandate some sort of registration. And certain employers may prefer (or necessitate) that you have a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) as well.
Plus, these traits will help you shine in this career:
- tolerance and active listening skills
- compassion and a warm demeanor
- a propensity for teaching
- both creative and critical-thinking skills
