Could having more sex improve your career?

A Swedish politician believes employees should get sex breaks on the job—and while we’re not sure we can get behind that idea, there are some workplace benefits to getting your groove on more often.

Let’s talk about sex.
Don’t worry, it’s not going to be the sexual harassment speech you should have already gotten from HR. We want to talk about two, consensual people who would rather spend their lunch breaks ripping each other’s clothes off than tearing into a sandwich from some deli across the street.
And this Swedish politician believes you should totally be allowed to get it on when you’re on the clock. Per-Erik Muskos, a 42-year-old local council member in a small town in northern Sweden, recently proposed that employees should be allotted a one-hour paid break from work to go home and have sex. That’s right, this guy—who may possibly be the most bizarre social activist of our time—wants to ensure everybody gets to have a little afternoon delight to disconnect and recharge every day.
Now, to be honest, this sounds like a page straight out of the employee handbook at The Wolf of Wall Street’s shady brokerage Stratton Oakmont—or like something you might say at a meeting for Sex Addicts Anonymous. And not to sound prude, but could you honestly imagine blocking out an hour in your calendar to do it?
If you can get past the weird factor of a 42-year-old politician wanting to write paid sex breaks into law, the idea actually isn’t half bad. Multiple studies have found that sex can actually improve your productivity at work by increasing your focus, creativity and energy.
Of course, we can’t get fully behind the idea of sneaking off during working hours for a midday rendezvous and especially not while on company property—but we can get in front of some of the benefits a healthy sex life can bring to your job performance. As if you really need a good reason to do it, we banged out five below that may just take your career over the hump.
You’ll be more focused
The average man thinks about sex 19 times a day—10 times a day for women, according to researchers at The Ohio State University. How can you be expected to focus on your work tasks if your mind is constantly wandering into the gutter?
It’s simple, really: Have sex. According to researchers at Pennsylvania State University, most people show a tremendous amount of focus during sex. So, when you’re having sex, you’re training your mind to stay focused, which contributes to mindfulness, the state of mind that allows you to keep focused on your work.
You’ll be more creative
Whether you’re trying to spice things up in the bedroom or in the boardroom, research shows that people who have sex every day tend to be more creative.
During sex, oxytocin is released, which has been found to increase cognitive flexibility, therefore promoting creativity. Just make sure to leave the handcuffs and blindfolds at home.
You’ll take fewer sick days
In the U.S., workers get an average of seven paid sick days a year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But catch a cold, get the flu or even mono, and those days will be used up in no time.
Now, you could just take vitamin supplements or carry around a bottle of hand sanitizer to ward off germs, but what fun would that be? According to sexual health expert Yvonne K. Fulbright, sex is another way you can boost your immune system. In her research, she found that people who had sex regularly had higher levels of antibodies that defend against germs and viruses, meaning sexually active people take fewer sick days. So the more sex you have, the less likely you’ll be to get sick… just make sure you’re practicing safely.
You’ll think more clearly
It can be hard to think straight in the heat of a moment, but once the deed has been done, your mind should be much more free of any such distractions. Researchers at the University of Maryland found that regular sexual activity not only allowed for neurogenesis, or the creation of new neurons in the brain, but also improved cognitive function, potentially helping people think more clearly.
Additionally, another study from researchers at Princeton University found that sex causes cell growth in the region of the brain that’s largely responsible for long-term memory, meaning sex can help prevent the decay that leads to memory loss and dementia.
You’ll be less stressed
Yoga? Yawn. If you’re stressed about that upcoming job interview or big presentation at work, multiple studies show you might be better off taking your frustrations out in the bedroom. When you have sex, your brain receives hormones and neurotransmitters including oxytocin (the bonding hormone), dopamine (the feel-good hormone) and serotonin (the serenity hormone), which, overall, enhances your mood, lowers your blood pressure, increases your sense of well-being and relaxes you.
Additionally, a study at the University of Gottingen found that people who do it less often take on more work to compensate for their sexual frustrations. And the increased labor results in—you guessed it—even less sex.
Just like having a good sex life can help your job performance, having a good job can improve your sex life. Maybe you work excessive hours that cut into your special one-on-one time, or your boss is, essentially, Satan’s mistress and makes your job a living hell. Whatever your reasoning is for hating your job, if you’re getting screwed in all ways but the good one, it may be time to put another notch in your resume and find a banging new job on Monster.
