POSITION:Academic Paraprofessional

Funding Source: Title-I or 31a

SUPERVISOR: MTSS Coordinator, in conjunction with the Principals

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

An academic paraprofessional funded by Title I or Section 31a provides extra instructional help to struggling students - beyond the classroom instruction and support of the General Fund Teacher of Record.

Title I is a federal program for low-income schools, while Section 31a is a Michigan state grant for at-risk students.

Paraprofessionals in both programs are partners in the instructional process and must always work under the direct, meaningful supervision of a certified classroom teacher. They cannot be given full responsibility for independent teaching, grading, or designing assessments.

ALLOWABLE DUTIES:

  • Conducting one-on-one or small-group tutoring.
  • Assisting with classroom management by organizing teaching materials.
  • Providing instructional assistance in a computer lab, library, or media center.
  • Acting as a translator or coordinating parental involvement events.
  • All paraprofessionals have a designated caseload of targeted students to provide specified support to in the classroom, lab or other designated intervention location.
  • Section 31a paraprofessionals' caseload consists of students who are identified per the 31a guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Title I Requirements: Under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), any instructional paraprofessional must have a high school diploma (or equivalent) AND meet one of three paths:

  • Complete at least 60 college credit hours (two years of study).
  • Hold an Associate Degree or higher.
  • Pass a formal academic assessment approved by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), such as the ETS ParaPro (minimum score: 460) or WorkKeys. [

Section 31a Requirements: The State of Michigan requires a high school diploma or equivalent. The Academy also requires the same qualifications as those paraprofessionals funded with Tite-I funds.

Contract Addendum

The "Supplement, Not Supplant" Rule: funds cannot be used to pay for a paraprofessional position that the district is already required by law to provide (such as a special education aide mandated by a student's IEP). It must strictly provide extra academic support.

Assignments vary by Grade Band and Primary Content Area but all Coaches are required to support teachers in the instruction of College & Career Readiness skills:
