Maintains accreditation standards, quality control and inventory.  Selects, trains, evaluates, counsels and discharges employees.  Maintains section in accordance with the goals and policies of the department and the institution.  Maintains budgetary control.  Works at bench when required.  Serves as inspector for CAP.  Participates in Laboratory Ward Rounds (customer service program).  Coordinates student rotations.</p><p><strong>Job Responsibilities:</strong></p><ul><li>Demonstrates up-to-date job knowledge. Demonstrates knowledge of, and adherence to, department policies and procedures. </li><li>Completes work assignments in a timely manner. Serves as a working coordinator of the section. </li><li>Assigns schedules and reviews the work of staff to insure that tests are performed in accordance with prescribed standards and the deadlines are observed.</li><li>Maintains an adequate number of qualified, competent staff following departmental and institutional policies and procedures. </li><li>Maintains knowledge of and compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements. </li><li>Maintains required records in accordance with accreditation requirements. </li><li>Sets up and monitors appropriate internal and external quality control for instruments and test correcting problems as necessary. </li><li>Responsibility for inventory and ordering of supplies for the section. Makes recommendations for standing orders. </li><li>Compares cost and quality of supplies. </li><li>Prepares procedure manual, including biennial review in accordance with departmental formats and accreditation guidelines. </li><li>Maintains test section “Activity Menu” and notifies the Manager in advance whenever a test is to be added or deleted. </li><li> Is responsible for preventative maintenance in the section. Makes periodic replacements in accordance with prescribed procedures.</li><li>Adheres to safety (Universal Precautions), infection control and hazardous materials policies. </li><li>Maintains compliance in the section and notifies the Manager if there are problems that require work orders of equipment. </li></ul><p><strong>Job Requirements:</strong></p><ul><li>Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Clinical Laboratory, Medical Technology, Chemical, or Biological Science (or equivalent) and</li><li>3 years of Medical Technology experience.</li><li>MT or MLS (ASCP) Certificate.</li></ul><h4>Overview</h4><p>Kettering Health is a not-for-profit system of 14 medical centers and more than 120 outpatient facilities serving southwest Ohio. Our mission is to live God’s love by promoting and restoring health. <p><strong>Job Title:</strong> Medical Lab Scientist – Blood Bank</p><p><strong>Location:</strong> Indianapolis, IN</p><p><strong>Duration:</strong> 13-Week Contract</p><p><strong>Schedule:</strong></p><ul><li>Evening Shift: 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM<br/><strong>OR</strong></li><li>Night Shift: 11:00 PM – 7:30 AM</li><li>Flexible start times available for 10-hour shifts</li></ul><p><strong>Guaranteed Hours:</strong> 40 Hours Weekly</p><p><strong>Compensation:</strong></p><ul><li><strong>Traveler Pay:</strong> $44–$47/hour ($1,760–$1,880/week) based on experience</li><li><strong>Local Pay:</strong> $37–$40/hour ($1,480–$1,600/week) based on experience</li></ul><h3>Position Overview</h3><p>We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Scientist with Blood Bank expertise to join a high-volume transfusion services laboratory. The ideal candidate will perform routine and specialized blood bank testing, compatibility studies, and blood component preparation while supporting the transfusion needs of both adult and pediatric patient populations. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced laboratory environment.</p><h3>Responsibilities</h3><ul><li>Perform blood bank testing and compatibility procedures in accordance with laboratory standards and regulatory requirements.</li><li>Conduct ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening, antibody identification, and antibody typing.</li><li>Perform immediate spin, IgG, and electronic crossmatches.</li><li>Conduct indirect Coombs testing and other immunohematology procedures.</li><li>Process and evaluate patient specimens accurately and efficiently.</li><li>Prepare, issue, and manage blood products for transfusion.</li><li>Investigate and resolve transfusion-related discrepancies and complex serologic cases.</li><li>Maintain accurate laboratory documentation and patient records.</li><li>Perform quality control, quality assurance, and instrument maintenance procedures.</li><li>Ensure compliance with safety, accreditation, and regulatory standards.</li><li>Collaborate with pathologists, physicians, and healthcare professionals to support patient care.</li><li>Provide timely and accurate laboratory results to support critical clinical decisions.</li></ul><h3>Required Qualifications</h3><h4>Education</h4><ul><li>Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related field required for MLS candidates.</li></ul><h4>Licensure & Certifications</h4><ul><li>ASCP Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Certification required <strong>or</strong></li><li>ASCP Blood Bank (BB) Certification required.</li><li>Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) candidates may be considered if they possess:<ul><li>ASCP-MLT Certification</li><li>ASCP-BB Certification</li><li>Significant blood bank experience in a large-volume facility</li></ul></li></ul><h4>Experience</h4><ul><li>Blood Bank experience required.</li><li>Experience in high-volume transfusion services environments preferred.</li><li>First-time travelers accepted.</li><li>Ability to work independently, particularly on evening or night shifts.</li><li>Experience supporting both adult and pediatric patient populations preferred.</li></ul><h4>Skills & Competencies</h4><ul><li>Strong proficiency in specimen processing and laboratory workflow management.</li><li>Experience performing:<ul><li>ABO/Rh Testing</li><li>Antibody Screening and Identification</li><li>Antibody Typing (Tube Method)</li><li>Immediate Spin Crossmatching</li><li>IgG Crossmatching</li><li>Electronic Crossmatching</li><li>Indirect Coombs Testing</li></ul></li><li>Strong understanding of immunohematology principles and blood bank operations.</li><li>Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.</li><li>Ability to maintain accuracy and efficiency in a high-volume laboratory.</li><li>Strong communication and teamwork skills.</li><li>Commitment to quality assurance, patient safety, and regulatory compliance.</li></ul><p>For more details reach at jknox@navitashealth.com or Call / Text at 732-791-4827.</p><p>About Navitas Healthcare, LLC: It is a certified WBENC and one of the fastest-growing healthcare staffing firms in the US providing Medical, Clinical and Non-Clinical services to numerous hospitals.
