Coffee badging is the latest workplace trend reshaping the hybrid and remote work conversation. Defined as when employees clock in at the office in the morning, grab a coffee, socialize briefly, and then continue working remotely for the rest of the day, this practice is gaining attention across generations of workers.

Monster’s 2025 Coffee Badging survey sheds light on how common coffee badging is, why employees are doing it, and whether it helps or hurts workplace productivity and work-life balance.

Key Findings in Monster’s Coffee Badging Poll

When employees clock in at the office, have a coffee, and work remotely for the rest of the day.

  • 12% of workers have participated in coffee badging
  • 46% believe Gen Z is most guilty
  • 21% balance remote work with in-office presence

How Common Is Coffee Badging?

  • 12% of workers admit to participating in coffee badging.
  • Frequency varies among those who do it: 5% do it once or twice per week. 4% do it three or more times per week. 3% do it once a month

Interestingly, 46% of workers believe Gen Z is the generation most guilty of coffee badging, more than Millennials, Gen X, or Baby Boomers.

Why Is Coffee Badging on the Rise?

The trend is linked to the ongoing tension between remote flexibility and in-office expectations. Workers cite several reasons for its growing popularity:

  • 21% say it allows employees to balance remote work with in-office visibility for career growth.
  • 21% believe it signals a desire for more remote work overall.
  • 17% think it’s about enjoying the social atmosphere of coworkers.
  • 14% see it as a way to avoid long commutes by traveling at off-peak times

In other words, coffee badging has become a middle ground—offering just enough presence at the office to be noticed, while still maintaining the flexibility of remote work.

Does Coffee Badging Boost or Hurt Productivity?

Opinions are divided:

  • 46% of workers believe coffee badging can increase productivity, either through flexible routines (24%) or balancing office structure with remote freedom (21%).
  • 43% think it could decrease productivity, pointing to wasted time from commuting (36%) or reduced in-person collaboration (7%).
  • 13% believe it has no impact at all.

Coffee Badging and Work-Life Balance Debate

The practice also sparks debate around work-life balance:

  • 44% say it helps by giving face-to-face interaction while preserving remote flexibility.
  • 41% believe it allows workers to structure their day in a more personalized way.
  • 37% like that it offers a social start to the day before shifting to remote work.
  • 34% appreciate that it makes office time feel like a short, purposeful visit.
  • On the flip side, 26% think it hurts balance due to fragmented routines, and 24% say commuting cuts into productivity and personal time.

The Future of Coffee Badging

Coffee badging reflects a larger workplace evolution. Employees are navigating how to meet employer expectations for in-person work while preserving the flexibility they gained from remote work. For some, coffee badging offers the best of both worlds—visibility at the office without the downsides of a full day on-site. For others, it introduces inefficiencies and work-life balance challenges. As hybrid policies continue to shift, companies may need to clarify their stance on coffee badging—or even embrace it as part of a flexible, employee-first culture.

Methodology:

The findings in this report are based on a survey conducted by Monster in February 2025 among 500+ U.S. workers. Respondents were employed either full-time or part-time at the time of the survey. Participants answered a mix of yes/no, single‑selection, and multiple‑choice questions about their experience with coffee badging, in-office vs. remote work, perceptions of productivity, and work‑life balance. The sample included workers across a range of industries, age groups, genders, and education levels to reflect the diversity of the U.S. workforce.
