Partners cross-functionally with Finance, Legal, and external advisors to support efficient tax operations, resolve complex tax matters, and contribute to strategic tax initiatives, including payroll tax considerations related to mergers and acquisitions (M&A).What you'll be doing:Payroll Tax Compliance & OperationsOversee accurate withholding, calculation, and remittance of federal, state, local, and territory payroll taxes (including Puerto Rico)Ensure timely daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual tax depositsReview, balance and approve all monthly, quarterly and annual tax filings/returnsMonitor compliance with changing payroll tax laws and regulationsManage tax registrations, terminations, and rate updates for new or existing jurisdictionsVendor & Outsourcing ManagementManage and oversee an outsourced Payroll Tax Partner deliverables for accuracy, timeliness, and complianceResolve escalations, discrepancies, and errorsLead vendor performance reviews and ensure SLA adherenceLead responses to tax notices, audits, and agency inquiries but investigate and resolve payroll tax discrepancies and penaltiesManage all abatements, refunds, and amended filingsMaintain audit-ready documentation and controlsAccounting & Financial ReportingParticipate in payroll tax reconciliation to the general ledger accounts as necessarySupport periodic, month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closeEnsure accurate accruals and payroll tax reportingPartner with Finance on SOX controls and internal auditsCross-Functional CollaborationPartner with Payroll, Finance, Legal, HR, and Treasury teamsProvide payroll tax guidance on benefits, equity, and compensation programsSupport business initiatives impacting payroll taxesMergers, Acquisitions & Strategic InitiativesConduct payroll tax due diligence for M&A activitiesSupport new entity setup, harmonization, and compliance post-acquisitionAdvise on payroll tax risks and integration planningSupport strategic decision-making with tax insightsProcess Improvement & ControlsDesign and maintain payroll tax controls, procedures, and documentationIdentify opportunities for process improvement and automationImplement system enhancements and tax updates as requiredEnsure compliance with internal governance and risk frameworksWhat you'll bring:Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Human Resources, or a related field required3+ years of progressive experience in payroll tax, payroll operations, or employment tax complianceDemonstrated experience managing multi-state payroll taxation, including federal, state, local, and territory requirements (e.g., Puerto Rico)Proven experience overseeing or partnering with outsourced payroll or payroll tax vendorsStrong background in payroll tax filings, deposits, reconciliations, audits, and notice resolutionHands-on experience with payroll and tax systems (ADP and Workday a plus)Baxter is committed to supporting the needs for flexibility in the workplace.
