This role offers the opportunity to contribute to a variety of rail and transit projects while working in a collaborative engineering environment focused on professional growth and technical excellence. Key Responsibilities <ul><li>Support the design and development of transportation and rail infrastructure projects.</li><li>Participate in field visits and data collection activities to assist with project planning and design.</li><li>Contribute to track design and related components for transit and railroad projects.</li><li>Assist in coordinating engineering tasks across project phases including planning, design, construction support, and maintenance.</li><li>Help prepare technical documentation including design reports, calculations, alternatives analysis, and cost estimates.</li><li>Support the preparation of project deliverables such as engineering plans, specifications, permits, and reports.</li><li>Ensure assigned tasks are completed on schedule and within project budgets.</li><li>Communicate effectively with internal team members, project stakeholders, and external partners.</li><li>Participate in project meetings and represent the engineering team in a professional manner.</li><li>Provide guidance and support to junior engineers when appropriate to encourage technical development.</li></ul>Qualifications <ul><li>Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.</li><li>Approximately 5-14 years of experience in transportation or rail-related engineering projects.</li><li>Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a project team environment.</li><li>Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and commitment to quality.</li><li>Excellent verbal and written communication skills.</li></ul>Preferred Experience <ul><li>Professional Engineer (PE) license in Illinois or the ability to obtain it.</li><li>Familiarity with engineering and design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, GIS tools, or Bluebeam.</li><li>Experience with Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.</li><li>Participation in professional transportation or rail engineering organizations is considered a plus.</li></ul>Additional Information This role offers the opportunity to contribute to meaningful transportation and rail infrastructure projects while collaborating with experienced engineers in a supportive professional environment. As an RWIC, you will be responsible for job site coordination, dispatcher/train communication, and various forms of On-Track Safety in both controlled and non-controlled track areas. Essential Duties & Responsibilities:• Jobsite Protection: Deliver required protection for each assignment, ensuring error-free compliance with rules, including radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers. Ensure work groups are clear of limits during train movements and grant permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed.
• Daily Briefings: Conduct daily job briefings with all personnel on-site to ensure adherence to railroad safety requirements.
• Documentation: Prepare and submit electronic forms such as job set-up forms, daily work reports, invoices, and other required reports.
• Tool Handling: Handle and place signs, derail, and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds, as needed.
• Safety Training: Actively participate in routine safety classes and qualification training.
• Communication: Maintain a high level of communication with RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules.
• Additional Duties: Perform other tasks as assigned to meet business needs. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:• Ability to meet the physical demands of the role and effectively warn roadway workers of approaching trains.
• Understanding of on-track safety training and qualification requirements.
• Proficiency in radio procedures for communication with RWIC/EICs (Employee in Charge) and work groups.
• Competence in conducting job briefings and placing railroad advance warning and stop signs.
• Capability to install a railroad derail and apply the locking device.
• Proficiency with electronic communications, including email and text, and standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite). Required Education and Experience:High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
Minimum of 3 years of Class 1 Railroad experience, preferably within the Maintenance of Way (MOW) department. Preferred Education and Experience:3 to 5 years of railroad track maintenance experience.
Prior experience with a railway company.

Locomotive Engineers have a minimum guarantee of approximately $94,000, with the potential to earn $100,000+.Training:
Comprehensive 4-7-month training program including Classroom and On-The-Job (OJT) Training.
CT's are required to successfully complete training and qualify for a Conductors License.
First 5 weeks of employment at NS Training Center in McDonough, GA.
Individuals are responsible for providing their own transportation to the area.
Norfolk Southern will provide the hotel accommodation, a mileage reimbursement, and a meal stipend during the 5-week training period in McDonough, GA.
The remaining training will take place at or near the hire location for on-the-job training.Work Schedule:
Irregular schedules determined by business needs.
Many jobs are on-call 24/7 with a 90-minute notice when not on a scheduled off day.
Minimum two rest days for every six consecutive working days.
Routine time away from home, 1-2 days at a time.
A CT will expect to work a schedule similar to that of a regular conductor.
As a conductor you will most likely be assigned to a conductors extra board.
Conductor extra boards have schedules with a minimum of two rest days for every six consecutive working days.
While not on your rest days, you are subject to be called to work 24 hours a day, on an as-needed basis.
Extra board work schedules are irregular and are determined by business needs.
You will be required to report to your work location within a 90-minute notice, regardless of time of day.
Reliable transportation is necessary.Benefits:
Medical insurance for you, your spouse, and eligible dependents is provided on the first day of the second calendar month of employment.
