If you think carpe diem are swimming in your neighbor’s koi pond, you’re probably not a translator. At least, not one that studies Latin. If you’d like to be en route to a new job, think of your translator resume as your passport and an invitation to interview as your fait accompli.
All double entendres aside, where do you start when putting together your resume? It’s best practice to look at the job ad before you begin and match up the job requirements to your skills and experience. For example, it would be a faux pas to apply to a job posting that said you must be a native speaker of French if you grew up speaking Spanish.
It’s also important to make your translator resume as easy to read as possible. Just because you can use 25 different fonts and six border styles does not mean you have carte blanche to do it. It’s interesting that carte means “document” in French and blanche is another word for “white” in several European countries—your goal when creating an eye-catching resume is to give your document lots of white space to avoid overcrowding the text.
